You say extremes flat? how much was your 285?

I recall them being 4k if not more when they got released, so what extreme are you talkin about?

I paid R3.5k. Yeah, it's extreme but not quite as extreme as the top end. I have 3 PCI-X 16X slots on my mobo too so I could have probably gone your route as well. I'm not too keen on dual card setups though. Maybe in a few years when they've really worked out their issues I will. I like hassle free computing ;)
 
So how is 2 5770's @ 4 more extreme than 3.5k? Even a 5870 is only like 1k more :D.

Ya i also like hassle free computing and crossfire should be hassle free. Sli is insane they fix things quick.

Correct me if i'm wrong.Flatspin,you say in your sig that everyone is unique right?Including you?Then you MUST perhaps give SLI-Fire a go.I betcha your sysytem will be the most unique of all the MYBB users........;)

It seems I was erroneous in my assertion about the 1156 & 1366 Intel Platforms. It seems at least one of the 1156 mobo's does support the faster DDR1600 RAM, though with this exclusion added by Intel: "DDR3 1600 or higher memory support on this motherboard requires compatible XMP enabled memory or advanced knowledge of BIOS and memory tuning; individual results may vary."

Here is the link to the Intel DP55KG Mobo specifications. (1156)

The Intel DX58SO (1366) supports DDR1600 straight off the bat without any need to fiddle in your BIOS.

All the other boards I looked at have "support for DDR3 1333 /1066 MHz DIMMs" and not the faster DDR1600. If they do, there is that silly Intel disclaimer as mentioned above.

I think I'd rather just buy a 1366 platform & not have the hassle of having to tweak my memory.

I actually did think about getting another GTX285 & when I phoned my suppliers they said they were out of stock, not ordering more in anticipation of the new nVidia range being released at the end of April.

I'd have to fork out for ANOTHER power supply AGAIN so I just figured I'd just plod along with what I have currently. :) I will definitely give SLI a go when I am due for my next upgrade, but I think I'll go Killa's route with ATI since it's definitely better value for money & the ATI's are less power hungry (currently) than nVidia's range.

Most P55 motherboards should support 1600mhz ram. The memory controller is on the chip in Nehalim so it is not a chipset issue. It only really depends on the BIOS, and depending on the chip it may require an overclock. E.G. an i5 750 only has a 2:10 max memory divider, meaning that RAM can't reach 1600mhz except by overclocking and increasing the CPU host freq to 160 (160x10/2 = 800). An i7 860, however, has a max divider of 2:12 (133x12/2=798), meaning that it doesn't need an oc for RAM to reach 1600mhz. Boards that don't support manually changing these variables won't be able to run ram at 1600mhz, probably why most of the Intel boards don't support it. Even if you have an i7 860 you probably won't run your ram at 1600mhz by default. This is because almost all PC3 12800 RAM defaults to JEDEC standard 1333mhz timings (or even 1066mhz) via SPD to ensure boot compatibility. This also means that you almost always have to set you RAM manually in the BIOS to get 1600mhz regardless of your motherboard. Some PC3 12800 DIMMS don't even have 1600mhz SPD timings.

XMP is Intel's extension of SPD, which also lets you set memory timings and frequency via software.

Oh yes. Just if you plan on using that drive for your OS rather get a WD Black drive.

Or drop to 4gigs ram and try squeeze in an ssd.

Why such a huge power supply? If you're not gonna run 3 5850s you really dont need such a huge power supply. Get a 750watt and put the cash saved into an ssd.

getting the HDD at decent price and regarding PSU,i want to keep all the components happy :D
 
Yip, 1000W is so overboard for a single GPU setup that will only draw about 475W when everything is running full tilt. And you could prob settle for a different case thats less expensive and try get a SSD. But when cases are concerned its totally up to the end user. In general a good R1000 case will give the same cooling as anything that costs more, unless you start looking at proper water cooling without the need to mod the case.

If you're only running 1 5850, even a 550watt would be enough. I'd suggest you get a 650watt though for some breathing room and longevity.

Definitely get a smaller power supply and an SSD.

Well other than an extra graphics card, nothing he adds to the system is going to draw alot of power. Add in another 5850, and you need about 650W.
 
Any suggestions on PSU and SSD and pricing?and wil it be wise to leave green caviar and get 500gb black caviar together with SSD?

You wont need the black drive if you get an ssd.

Keep the green drive for storage and the ssd for windows and applications.

I would not suggest getting a ssd for a gaming rig though, while very fast and awesome only buy the ssd if you have spare cash. You will see more gain on a gaming pc by rather putting that 2 odd k into a bigger vga card.

Don't get me wrong ssd's are insane but i would rather have a stock drive with top end card than ssd with middle end card.

Having little to loading screens is awesome and increases the overall speed of his pc.

Dude i have 2 ssd's i know about the loading times but if i had a choice between a 5870 with a ssd or a 5970 with a stock drive i know which i would choose and it would not be the ssd.
