i7 2600k .. does it come with a cooler?!

I was also under the impression my 2600K would not come with a cooler... but it did (not that I used it - bought a Coolermaster V6GT)

Loving my i7 2600k :D

It did come with a cooler, I'm using it for now until I decide what after market cooler to get.

I'm also wondering what cooler to get.
I read up about the "Coolermaster Hyper 212 Plus", but it seems to have gaps in it's base. Any better alternatives?

What board do you have?

Got the 212+ on my wifes Q6600, it does very well for its price. I am not yet impressed with the V6GT. I had the V8 on my old q6600, that was a good cooler, but I didn't have a 1155 bracket for it.... (they do come with it new now days)
 
the mux is ok. I have one on my 2600k and what they don't tell you is that it has a 3 pin fan connector so the asus boards can't control the speed, runs at full speed all the time. The other aspect is it's max rpm is 1200 which is fine for normal stuff but i overclock to 4.6ghz and at that at full usage (prime95) the temp hits 81C which isn't great. I am thinking about getting another fan that goes higher.

Should work.

In summer my Q6600 at 3.4GHz idles at 37'C - 40'C under it, Prime95'ed at 60'C.
 
ya my i7 is idling at 30C now and then hits 81C at full load at 4.6ghz. It may be that the MB is compensating too much on voltage so if i adjust that lower then it'll be cooler. I'm not really phased though, just wouldn't mind a faster fan is all :)

AFAIK You can buy the adapters/accessories for them, at least I recall one of my old Zalman coolers you could get the attachments.
 
Well, I got my Zalman CNPS10X Performa yesterday, but when I opened it up to install it later there was no thermal grease, despite every review and the manual saying there should be. Pretty annoying since I'd just given the last of my spare grease to a friend a few weeks ago and specifically decided not to buy more because it came with some. So just a heads up that either the version we get here doesn't come with grease (and only has 2 instead of 4 anti-vibration pads so you'll need more if you want to run 2 fans), or I was unlucky.

Gonna head down later and grab some grease and then I'll let you guys know if this thing is worth it on the temp side, and about ram clearance, etc...

lol Thanks for the offer. I used to live in CT but now I am in a small town in the Eastern Cape.

I actually found decent thermal paste at a local store, Evercool Cruise Missile. Yes, I was also very sceptical, but it was the only thing available here, so I bought and the reviews show it to be pretty good. Oh and the vibration pads are actually there. They are just very thin, so what looks like 1 actually splits into 2 so there are the 4 for a 2 fan setup, and all that was missing was the thermal paste. Someone in the factory taking a tea break most likely.

Anyway, about the Zalman CNPS10X Performa. Cooling seems to be good. With the fan at full (2000rpm), maxed out at 39 degrees at stock 2500K (with Turbo so 3.4Ghz) on Prime95. Idles at 23 degrees. With the PWM resistor cable (1500rpm), it maxes out at 41 degrees. Idles at 25 degrees. Ambient temperature is about 20 degrees, but that is using a really old thermometer, plus at idle the CPU is stepped down to 1600mz or lower. I have a feeling that the results have a lot to do with my case cooling setup. Since I’ve got slightly positive pressure (dusty as hell here), I think there is just not enough air coming in for the fan to take full advantage of the extra speed.

A few caveats, though. First, it is very finicky to install. It uses one of those horrible all-in-one backplates, and I had to make tiny little adjustments to the nuts to get them to be the right spacing apart, and the double-sided tape to hold the backplate in place just gets in the way. The screws are also not spring-mounted, so you have to be sure to tighten them just the right amount. Second, the fan is quite loud at full speed (2000rpm) and has a rather annoying buzzing timbre ime, but with the PWM resistor cable (1500rpm) it is nice and quiet and not intrusive at all. I’m sure that people obsessed with sound could run it even quieter without a huge change in temps.

As for RAM clearance, I’m sorry to say that it will block the first slot if you are using RAM with anything other than very low-profile heatsinks. I specifically bought ADATA RAM in case of this (you can see them here: ADATA Gaming Series). The front edge of the fan sits a few millimetres above the stick in slot 1. It doesn’t block slot 2 or anything else. It is also not as tall as I expected and I suspect that if you have the CM692 like me, but non-windowed, then you may just be able to squeeze in a side panel fan above it, but I wouldn’t bet on it.

Overall, I would say that it is pretty good value for money (R330 odd), especially wrt the temps and noise levels with the resistor cable, if you know what you are doing wrt installing heatsinks. If you are doing it for the first time, I would say stay away and get a much more user-friendly heatsink.

Yeah, probably this weekend if I have time. Only just had enough today to get it slapped on and do basic stress testing to check it was mounted fine, etc... I'll post here once I've got something stable, will try to get around 4.5ghz stable first, and then see how high I can take it.
 
You just set the multi to 46 and the rest you can leave on auto. That's how easy it is to OC these CPUs, I'm certain a monkey could do it.

At 4.8ghz running at 59 degrees in Prime95 (so just under 20 degrees higher than stock temp), idling at 31 degrees, room temp about the same as yesterday. This is with the fan at 1500rpm quiet setting. Not sure how stable it is, since I only ran it for about a half hour to get the temp stable. Voltage around 1.43v under load, though I might be able to drop it down some, but I'm not really interested in maxing out the chip right now. I'm going to spend my time testing out this chip's performance. So I'm going to go for 4.5Ghz at lowest possible voltage, highest speed at 1.35v, and then try overclocking via the Turbo multipliers to see what that is like.
