iBurst ADSL put to the test

So the tests shows it's pretty much the same as IS and SAIX [just the one ping test to london on SAIX seems a little crap, but it's kinda irrelevant considering the target market of this package?] .

Now considering it's "pretty much the same" , is the "online gaming" part really worth doing this? And i mean taking into account the part about iBurst's poor service records.

It seems like iBurst are selling the bandwidth at R50 p/GB . Is something like Steam and international gaming [i.e. Modern Warfare 2 / WoW / Ventrillo-Teamspeak] included in this deal ? [Also ability to download game updates and game clients ? ] or will you need to shell out R50 p/GB for that anyway?

So in short, how much bandwidth would you use to do what IGame is offering ? Is it worth R99 ? [that would be 3GB-6GB international bandwidth from certain other ISPs]....

According to these tests, only the SAIX latencies tested is of any concern. The rest of the tests doesn't show any signicant deviations. Edit: [diabolus beat me to the same conclusion >.< ] Day-to-day stability is far important and needs to be tested over a significant period of time.

Notice however, that SAIX, IS, Telkom, etc [sic]. It should not be mentioned in the same sentence. :D

Read my signature or the iburst forums , listing complaints about billing service and support and blatant lies towards clients and you will realise very quick that iburst is just not a company you ever want to deal with willingly.

i had a very good experience with Iburst, in fact I would recommend it to anyone and would go back in a flash if their prices could compete with the Afrihost / ADSL combo

Maybe I am missing something? Why compare different wired copper DSL offerings, they all go via your local Telkom exchange and that is where the speed is determined, the rest of the route your data-packets follow is nearly irrelevant to the result? If this was a wireless service producing these kinds of speeds at the prices offered - one can take notice. Still waiting for the first provider to offer fibre-to-the-home, then we can talk speed, else Telkom's got us by the "short and curly’s"

According to tests, it is not much of difference.

Why they did not done pingtest.net?

Had : So you not with them anymore ?
When last did you have iburst ? Since Jannie took the reigns things have gone downhill very fast.

I agree with ave there :)

Maybe cause you work for iburst ...
Diegoa read my signature link and then tell me that iburst doesnt lie or treats their clients sh#t.
To this day , Jannie has made no attempt to even apologise for the lies and false promises he gave clients.
Instead he is hiding away now hoping that it will blow over with time...
As i said before , Im not with iburst anymore and will continue to warn people against signing up with a company that creates a clientbase around lies and deceipt and carrot-on-a-stick tactics.
I feel its my duty to man kind to warn people from falling for the iburst trap.

A lie is a lie , no matter how little it might mean to you.
Bad service is a fact , ask anyone who have ever had to call on iburst for support.
Billing errors are a usual occurance .
Connection problems are also a very common occurance.

Iburst is a bad choice , people should know that.

Maybe im mistaken, but how can it be free if you have to pay R100 a month?

LOL :P Agreed,

besides nothing to do with Iburst is free, even if they gave you something free on the street, know that somewhere some poor sod is being incorrectly billed, punished for that which you "receive" free ;)

Yea it's a little vague how exactly the structuring work, is R99 the cost of the iDSL service or the iGame service. Is the iGame service a "free" addon to the packages listed in the article or do you still pay R99 ON TOP for it?

Hence why i asked how much bandwidth is that -really- ? For R99 you can get 3-6GB international bandwidth. So unless this iGame offering chows serious amounts of bandwidth [i.e. 10GB] -normally- , i'm still struggling to see why you'd pay for this on top of the iDSL packages which ALSO are more expensive than other ISPs [R50 p/GB vs. R30 and R15 p/GB].

As a free ADDON to an existing offer [i.e. 5GB a month package, giving you access to the iGame servers for free] sounds more realistic to me. Isn't WA doing something like that?

Now granted, i know certain games use alot of bandwidth combined with voice-streaming and with updates, but i'm not sure what these servers will offer other than hosting very specific games? If it includes some sort of Steam-mirroring, yes , definitely worth it for a gamer, but just the game-play bandwidth?

If i check my game related bandwidth usage, most of it is actually updates, clients and outside-the-game related activities [streaming and/or browsing] .

For the lack of connectivity in my area, I took the more expensive 3G route rather than dealing with Ibust again. This offer seems to be on the right track, but it's to little to late!

If it's on iBurst I'd rather rip out my own eyes and feed them to rabid dogs and then empty a bag of salt into each eye socket. I don't even want a free iWorst service, even if it does only cost R100 per month. Er..

The big differential is that the iGame servers have direct access to the iDSL links so there is no congestion or peering problems that can potentially occur. The links from Telkom are redundant and the links within the iBurst network are redundant which implies that this service should be able to provide great availability.
