iBurst slashes WiMax prices

Oooooh! an alternative! no wait, Iburst. Accounts department is abysmal. Support is abysmal.. Maybe wait a bit longer.

Their accounts department managed to lose my banking details last year.
After nearly a year being with them, I randomly get an email, then a phone call, requesting I deposit cash into their account and supply them with my banking details as they'd lost them.
I told them not to bother and them losing my details could be taken as my dumping them as an ISP.

Good news re the price cuts, unfortunately, too little too late.. And it's ibust.

deja vu.. wasn't there an article justifying it not too long ago?

It's amazing: On Monday an article defending their WiMax product & pricing was published here (http://mybroadband.co.za/news/Telecoms/6855.html) and today they not only drop their WiMax prices but they also mention that it is "effective from February 2009", so it smells like iBurst had the initial article published as part of a product placement and/or product advert stunt!

That makes the initial article's opening line (iBurst WiMax may be expensive, but there is a reason for it) seem all the more suspicious.

I think the real reason is that it has simply been waaaay overpriced from the start, especially the hardware: Nearly R6000 for a single hardware unit?! Come on!

So the price cuts may be welcome news, but it's certainly not a case of them doing us a favour. No, this came about due to a panic about low sales and thus it was inevitable - and it is most certainly overdue...

They still have to sort out :

1. Accounts department
2. Their email server
3. Their network infrastructure
4. Get rid of throttling/blocking services (if I want to run a web/email server then I want to do so)

And there's other issues as well, but their accounts dept is the single biggest issue of them all.

But most important, not having a prepaid service really sucks.

Incoming ports are open on my link and I host a web server behind my WiMax connection.

Can't comment on the other points.

Apart from the fact that WBS has its grubby paws on this particular WiMax network and WBS' accounts department will no doubt fraudulently deduct money from its customers' bank accounts [as is the case with iBurst], it is that little word "shaped" which puts me off completely.

ok, I admit, I'm doff with these things, but I truly don't understand the pdf article pricing, so let me ask: if I want a 5g cap on a 1024 line, with all the equipment needed for wiMAX what will my monthly premium be?

1. Hire the right people/get a system that works for you
2. As as point one
3. Vodacom is building the network over iBurst license
4. IMHO, Vodacom manage that part of the wimax network

too expensive...and too much lag...

I opted for Voda 3G... pricier, but more speed..

Yes

In a nushell... 'nuff said!

This restores some of my faith in the South African consumer.

Clearly we were all clever enough to see though iBurst's BS justifications for their high prices, and refused to buy their product.

The only way they were going to gain any new customers was to drop the prices. I can only hope that this price drop is 'Too little, too late' and that they have lost a siginificant number of customers as a result of their greed.

Just my 10c

1. Surprisingly I have not had any hassles with accounts for +-6 months now... But yes their track record is abysmal (in my own experience as well)
2. I Do Not use their e-mail server so cannot comment on that. (GMail etc.. ?)
4) This is a MAJOR source of annoyance working in Software Dev. They BLOCK port 1433 which is the default port for SQL Server. Do you know how many clients I have had to change the SQL Server port on?!

"The price of a 1 Mbps WiMax service with 5 GB of bandwidth is reduced from R 995 to R 760 per month while the 10 GB option will now cost R 1040 instead of R 1335."

I am surprised that no one has pointed out the Screamer WiMax price for the same thing, except that it is not shaped is 5GB - R570 and 10GB - R1025.
