Tomorrow the CCC hears something on an FXI complaint about SABC, then on friday they hear a complaint on telkom's billing system.
BY THE WAY! - looks like telkom is planning the following from mid november-
John Doe buys his 3gb
John Doe uses 3gb on international
John Doe is cut off from international, but can continue accessing local, where local is billed per usage
ie from mid nov it looks like we're going back to a dialup-type pay per usage wrt local

Well you could basically do that with a local account anyway, the important bit is "uses 3gb on international". Does that definitely mean that local no longer counts towards your cap, or just that it is not subject to the cap once the cap is reached, including local.
Also, they pinned the cap issues on ISP's, so is this "solution" only for Telkom ISP? Because that's something for the competition commision once again.

Yes, it appears and was stated by Telkom that when they are able to comply, local usage will not be counted with international in the cap.

I hope the judge (or whoever) has some sense. There is NO argument about Telkom's caps, they are ridiculous and probably the lowest in the world with ADSL. Either way, what kind of a rubbish excuse is that? You don't get capped because then you would have no internet, maybe if bandwidth was a little cheaper people could afford it.
The fact that local is capped and charged at R15 or even R50/GB with international accounts is.. stupid.

Another question (thanks for the replys), would local then be counted and billed seperately while you are still on your international cap? I assume it would have to be if they wanted to bill for it, otherwise people would buy 1GB international accounts just to use uncapped local and 1GB of international at the end of the month.
However it makes their accounts hard to advertise, people would then pay what they used to, plus any local usage, so it would look like a bad thing to the average user. Uncapped local with the cheapest 1Gb package you can find then? Sounds okay
I suppose we can only hope for cheaper prices than the current R15-20 per GB for local if it's billed automatically. They'd also have to show local usage seperately now...

Gosh Ihatewindows, my brain is fried right now. MyADSL will be putting out an article on this soon, but either way I'll respond to you tomorrow. There are no easy answers here and I need to go back and read through my notes and Telkom's written submission.

Pay per MB for local?
Telkom has officially lost it. How are they going to sell this to the public? Heck, majority of the public would assume that .co.za sites are “local”.I predict people running up huge bills they cannot pay - That is if Telkom decides to implement this stupid idea.

our regulator is a pieace of crap. they have no power @all..
companies just do what they want..
in Sa we need regulator like that watch dogs(regulator Ofcom) in the uk.Which they have true power.. when they bark companies jump and change what they do wrong or else.
if not they get fined every day, a certain % of there profits.
and tis not a small lum sum of cash. quite a high fine..

Thanks Debbie, excellent work, to you RPM, Cara and dominic for making it. These running commentaries are actually a good idea. It would be nice for someone to be present at all these events and to give us running commentary. Its nice to know each issue as its brought up.
Also, get the names of those telkom lawyers so we can start a wall of shame

It was mentioned during this thread - but I didnt see a followup.
Did anyone take photographs - either during the process, if allowed - or outside, when the various people emerged from the building?
We need a series of captioned photographs of the Telkom team. Did anyone think to be snapping some pix - and if so, could they place 'em online for the forum's perusal and general info?
Its one thing for Telkom to quietly and privately argue issues - but I think it would be very useful if every time they have to appear, that the forumites who are there and able, take pix, and post them online - so that the many other thousands of forumites can get a good look at who these people are.
Kind of like an 'Operation Sunshine' - shine a light on these Telkom people, (and also so that the word goes out that if you're arguing something for Telkom, your pix are going to be up online within hours of you appearing), as its clearly in the public interest. It's not enough, and tactically doesn't 'do' anything to simply have witnesses report back in text, to the forum. Pictures are worth a thousand words. Take pix and show us who these people are, that are arguing Telkom's various cases.
Much of Telkom's actions, thrive on secrecy - I think this forum should deny them this, as far as possible, within the limits of the law.

Great suggestion Lonegunman. A few things-
- I don't have a camera cellphone... and the digital was stolen
- A certain amount of decorum must be maintained. It is not always possible to snap pics- the right moment and a certain amount of discretion is required
- That said I do think this is a good idea- W1z4rd has been telling me for ages this needs to be done, and I will endeavor to do this in future
- I can't remember if tommygun took pics at the CCC hearing
- I asked a TAG (Telecommunications Action Group) member who came along to Telkom's AGM to snap a few pics - will contact him to see what he got
If we can record these Telkom scum and their lies, and show the world the siffyness we have to deal with perhaps more results will come out.

Excuse the ignorance, but since when was dialup pay per usage?!?!?!?
Dialup WAS flat rate... X amount per month, off you go! The whole dialup scene changed VERY silently from flat rate to pay per use the MOMENT telkom adopted that model with ADSL. Why charge a flat rate when you can charge per MB right?
I really don't understand this whole principle of pay per MB... It's absurd. You pay for a pipe, not what goes thru the pipe... Christ, what's next.. Charge per MB on diginet lines and ATM circuits???

Dial-up has never been flat rate in SA... sure you pay your ISP an access fee, but on top of that you had to pay Telkom for every minute online (local call minute).
I was comparing the minute-counting one does on dial up to the megabyte counting it looks like we're going to be doing on local.
