Your The MAN! You really are! *Stay strong never give in*

Really send my congratulations to you for what you doing!!

This telkom thing has gone on way to long!

Crippling the country we are living in. [Explanation with example to follow at the end]

Really feel you have a lot to play. ie Race/under privileged card (Going against the countries political policies, economical and socially: the under privileged denying them there right to ‘Cheap’ education), slowing economic growth ( cutting communication within the country {see example}), Destroying any hope reaching an international level of technical growth.

I am a student studying engineering; we unfortunately spend our lives on the computer, and a lot of the resources for our course (Mechanical Engineering) are only found on the web. Not all of the students in my class can afford to own a pc, let alone get internet at such ridiculous prices, yet the varsity feels the need not to make a loss on the ridiculously price internet so that filters out into the students! And even more to poorer students.

What I have seen that if we as an occupation are not on the internet there is very little chance of completing with international industry. Engineers (Black, White, Coloured doesn’t matter) build this country they are responsible for giving homes and jobs to people. If the high cost of communication is making the rich richer well that’s life, but if it is primarily responsible for the slow growth of this continent then there’s a problem!!

We as a country tent to price our life styles somewhere round the UK. If something is twice as expensive we go ‘wooo’, 5 times more expensive ‘throw our hands up’. BUT 1000 times more expensive??? Only a judge getting paid by Telkom would not be able to see the criminal side to the story and forget to see the logic behind it.

And now they want to see how far they can go?? With the 3 gig cap?????

Think about it, seriously think about IT!!!!!

Has anyone tried THIS before ? i dont know ?

did anyone ever got allot of information from the public, like from this forum, and 5 guys made an appointment with telkom head office, walking in to their office and tell them that you want to a address a problem that has been going on for a while now, and you and the rest of the community wants an answer that could never be given ?

We are paying customers, so we pay for what we get, like you said anyone will know we are being wripped of seriously, but when it comes to the court, then 100 000+ paying customers cant be wrong against 1 judge. We don’t want a war, just a answer to our maybe 10 question on 1 A4 page.
I am willing to do that.

We have large business running here and only get diginet R3880 for 64k ! now that is really bad.
You can bring in allot of things, like education ect (they (telkom) are holding it back) at the end of the day we need to play their hand so that theymust take responsabilaty for poor information and education, cause it is in their hands, BUT THEY HOLD IT BACK.
You just need allot of people seeing in in that light, then you have a chance.
MAKE THEM LOOK and FEEL bad.
Else it will go on for ever, they really have nothing to loose

i wouldn't mind paying alot less for the line rental and the same for the bandwidth assuming:

1. No per 100MB Billing
2. Atleast 20GB Cap on international ( excluding local )
3. Uncapped local
3. Guaranteed minimum 80% of bandwidth availible at any given time for local and international.

wanna pay less, then help each other, I will !!!

I have a little solution:

Why cant we built a website for people to post their problems with the service of telkom, and everything being said in this forum.
We can then take all the queries and put it on 1 page all together and demand a answer for these 10 or so questions. 100 000+ paying customers will get 10 answers from telkom.
But on my own I wont !
Like I said before we must take the distribution of information and education to the next level.
We can hold telkom responsible for the distribution of the information, and I am sure there are allot of other stuff to !
If they limit us with caps and bandwidth they limit South Africa’s growth, so if we take it to the government and ask them for a reason why our growth is being held back by 1 company ???I tell you in the smaller towns there will never be information and better education if we don’t do something, and at the end of the day even the corporat guys will benefit from this !!
You can go on and on arguing abou this, but “IT” will stay as it is………
Please Help

There are really two components of broadband that are too expensive in SA:

1) The connectivity. The monthly charge for a 192,384,512 or 1024kbps ADSL line from TELKOM is excessive. In Germany you pay around R80 for a 1024kbps line

2) The traffic, i.e. the MB's. I'm happy to pay per MB, but the costs per shaped(~7c) and unshaped MB's (~14c) are way too high in SA, mostly because large providers like SAIX (which is TELKOM of course) are charging the ISP's too much

By the way, it seems that shaping traffic so that an "unlimited" connection really is limited is quite common overseas as well. Check out

- Lower Cost
- Availability to remote areas
- Higher Bandwith
- No Line Rental
- No Shaping
- No Capping
- NO CACHING OF CONTENT .... EEEK This is an eternal nightmare and I HATE proxies. When I had ADSL and Cable in Canada they did not cache.

mmmm ... is that TOO much of a tall order for TELLSCUM ?

there has been a few oposition for telkom, but no one had enough power to take over thei empire. maybe the only way is to go via icasa, its not that hard if you do the right stuff, and use the right hardware. i know. then you run your own telephone system on a wireless network. i dont know wheres telkom main profit, on calls or on data? but i still think the best way is to let them take responsibility for not be able to transport educational stuff. so that they can expand their infrascture, and then the rest will follow...

May I ask: can we please get some support?

When I have to call the famous: 0800 DSL DSL number my heart sinks to my feet and my blood pressure rises!

Sometimes I sit here for ten minutes whilst the phone sings silly songs to me. I do not have the time to sit and wait my days over until they decide to eventually answer the phone. And when they do they start asking questions only an expert can answer. My house people refuse to assist me to place a call for a problem as they are no longer able to answer all the questions. So now I am forced to sit and listen to silly songs myself.

Can something please be done about this?
Please answer the phone!
Stop asking 50 silly technical questions?
Give some assistance.

There is a noise on the line sir, yes for twenty seconds after I answered the phone, no sir the computer has no problem it is on the land line – but I still have to switch on the computer and tell which lights are flashing and start up all kinds of programs and goodness knows what. And at the end of it all… remember if we have to come out unnecessarily you will have to pay for the call out. I nearly feinted.

Support please – any support wil do!

I would like for you to show just how urgent it is to make ADSL cheaper in this country. There is a serious consequence if Icasa does not act now.

Children in South Africa today will grow up trying to compete with children from South Korea / China / Japan / US / Europe who have access to bandwidth now. Your children have no chance in hell of competing with that. This is extremely important because the world is getting flatter by the day.

And just how many jobs are moving overseas? A friend of mine moved to NZ recently, not because of crime, but because of bandwidth costs! He retrenched 5 of his employees in SA and now 5 people in NZ have jobs!

Telkom poles

BTech said:
Lastly, why are we paying for lines that were laid 20 years ago. The lines in my backyard are ancient and paid for a thousand times over, yet every month I have to pay for it, when I asked Telkom to replace it they said well it still looks ok and left.

On this topic: who owns the wooden pole in my back yard? The yard belongs to me, there is no clause in my deed concerning any poles! Logically TELKOM should be paying ME rent on the area of my yard they are using (Vodacom pays when they erect a basestation on your property). TELKOM may have large government shareholding, but they are NOT a government agency, they do not have rights to your yard!

Lets start a "KICK TELKOM OFF OUR TURF" movement!

Being from Australia and now working and living here, you dont have ADSL.

The min speed in Australia is 256/64 kbps unshapped with 200mb for $29.95 or R124.80 ZAR, with no line cost or join fee or admin costs.

For a faster speed of 1500/256 kbps unshapped with 20GB inlcuded for $129.95 or R541.46 ZAR :)

Compared that to Telkom prices  with 140,000 members and South Africa having a larger pouplation than Australia.

Telkom is screwing its customers and the public and don't care about what they do. Telkom Management still makes sure they collects their bonus and share dividends.
This include the Minster of Communication or "lack of". As anyone checked how many shares she has in Telkom???

Looks like Australia is beating South Africa in more than just sports.
A more affordable ADSL network for their customers.

Good Luck with ICASA.

hello everyone- im new here.

i joined just cos i need to vent about the way Telkom is robbing the country.

in my humble opinion- i think we should educate the blacks - who constitute the vast majority of the population about just how much we are being overcharged and underserviced.

if they all become aware that they could be paying much, much less for the use of their beloved cellphones, then there is a good chance that we will see some mass action against Telkom/Vodacom.
currently its mainly whites ( im Indian myself) who are the majority of the ADSL users. with the way things are- the Govt will not pay much attention to you and the bulk of the countries people are blissfully ignorant about whats going on.
so, i suggest lots of articles in the African newspapers. show lots of comparisons about the cellphone/internet costs worldwide to Telkom etc.
and show just how much the fat-cats at Telkom are making. it would also be useful to speak to black teachers ( get them to tell their students) that they could have had fast, cheap internet access but Telkom & Govt is the obstacle.
then we can bring in the 2010 World Cup and how our telecommunications infrastructure etc need to be revamped /upgraded.
tell the people that it will be very disgraceful if we are unable to handle the broadcasting of 2010 due to greed.
you know, just lay it on & let the masses do our work -in the end we all benefit.

just what comes to my mind

Any news on this story with the register? There is actually a lawyer looking into this, but haven't received feedback in ages. It is very interesting, considering how vehemently the DoC is vying for Ivy to get "control" of ICASA. Conspiracy here maybe?

I would like to see ICASA look into iBurst, Sentech offerings along with the ADSL as the one effects the other.

Other then that, I think most of the ideas and moans already.

scrap the line rental ... recommend they fine (telscum, vodacom, cellc, iburst, sentech and mtn) for their exorbitant data rate ( Rands / MB) fees. ditto what has been said b4
