ICASA confiscates cellular phones

What crap! If I import a few Vertu handsets how can they confiscate it?

Wonder how long before this evidence hits the streets of Alexandria for healthy profit?
 
I've always wondered how they deal with foreign visitors arriving in South Africa and using their non-ICASA approved cell phones on roaming. With this kind of law surely they could just set up a stand at the airport and confiscate everyone's phone on arrival?
 
What about imported iPhones - they're not "distributed" here and wouldn't receive and ICASA stamp. My SE is a replacement for the one that was stolen (thanks South Africa) and comes from the Middle East - of course its not ICASA approved!
 
Here I must say that ICASA is not at fault – they have to fulfill their mandate, both in type approval and enforcement, and this is exactly what they are doing. Unless the law changes they should really be commended for this action – lets just hope they spend equal amounts of energy on other projects!
 
It's just a pity they can't better allocate manpower to liberalizing the market rather than stealing phones which they are 'destroying'

So are Non-Icasa Approved Cell-phones Dangerous or something?
Is there evidence that imported phones from Dubai are very different from
locally approved phones?

Non-Icasa approved cell-phone's look different to Ivy's cell-phone and must be destroyed :D

...sheesh - what about tourists bringing their phones over with them - no stickers ?

Sounds like a selectivly applied, somewhat poorly thought out regulation to me.
