Icasa loses its linchpin
South Africa’s telecommunications regulator may have high staff turnover rates but new communications authority Icasa councillor Andrew Barendse took matters to a new level when he didn’t even pitch up for his first day of work.

Barendse confirmed to the Mail & Guardian this week that he would not be taking up his position as Icasa councillor because he has been poached by the regulator’s biggest headache, the fixed-line incumbent, Telkom. Barendse’s decision is a massive blow for Icasa, which has its back against the wall in a titanic struggle to regulate the sector and stimulate competition.

Telkom bought the mofo off!!!

as i recall the guy debbie2 said was our best hope

Andrew Barendse says his decision to take up a position at Telkom is based purely on economic reasons

At least he's honest!! :D

Approached by the M&G to provide a self-assessment Icasa listed a number of achievements for the year and rated its performance as an A.

Icasa insisted that it had “never faltered in delivering on its mandate”

And ICASA delusional as ever!

Dont ICASA first have to do something to call it a "struggle" and finding no proof after how many years doesnt count as work

economic reasons - bear in mind a councillor gets paid more than an MP

///blood boiling

ICASA give itself an A.........that's just sad guys

Well uhmm, it's not really their backs that they have against the wall; and they're loving it; prison style!

Regardless of who gets the position, ICASA still has its hands tied behind its back, remember certain fat politicians have vested interests in keeping certain telecommunication companies on top.

The best step forward in my opinion is to :

1. Dissolve ICASA - they're never going to get anything right.
2. Open the market up to anyone who wants to provide telecoms.

There will be 2 or 3 years of mess and there after several stronger players will emerge with smaller competitors always nipping on their heels to keep them in line.

The whole problem is that the telecoms market is regulated - all that does is offer protection to the companies like Telkom.

Just shows what can happen when you don't read your mail ... Paris I hope you're taking notes :D

Wasn't this guy employed at Telkom as head of regulatory affairs or something before accepting his nomination at ICASA? So now he ditches ICASA and goes back to Telkom, how is this shocking? I had my doubts about an ex-Telkom employee being elected as ICASA councillor at the outside.

WHERE?!

Please show me the "titanic struggle."

Who writes this stuff, do they have any grasp on reality? If this is a titanic struggle then please show me people doing nothing because I would really like to know the difference. (A bit like Ngakula and "crime is dropping.")

Closest we get to "titanic" is the ship, and we all know what happened to them: ignored and left to drown due to incompetence & uncaring.

Yeah it's less 'titanic struggle' and more 'piece of paper versus shotgun blast to the face'

Hehehe... Honestly speaking.. Someone should keep a diary of events of our SA Telecoms Industry. Its turning into a SOAP opera!

I've given up hope a looong time ago with this GVT of ours.
I cant blame telkom anymore. Its all GVT's fault!

What a crock! There really is no light at the end yet!!
