Icasa may take Sentech spectrum

headline grabbed me...could this be? use it or lose it? some sense at last...

but no, it seems it is only the minister wagging the regulator again.

sentech should not be doing this.
sentech cannot even put a proper plan on the table.
sentech is a consumer services disaster. proven.

if i was national treasury i would react very badly to this and tell the yapdog to watch its step and not try to blackmail treasury into wasting money

shocker

Sentech are complete idiots. They have no concept of customer service.

STOP WASTING MY TAXES FUNDING THEM

Yapdog? :D:D Very well put - seems that's all they do nowadays - yap yap yapping away :D

But I am not surprised at this, it was a long time in coming, and iBurst will follow suit - unless iBurst shape up drastically.

Yet Matsepe-Casaburri insists her plan would improve the lives of millions by taking services to rural communities, and would lower the exorbitant cost of communicating.

The minister has criticised the treasury for failing to fund the plan, but the impasse remains.

Hmmm... it seems Ivy is living in her own world....

The Vodacom CEO was very outspoken on this issue – he feels very strongly that Sentech should simply lose their Spectrum and that Government made the right decision not to give them funding.

Quote of the day from Alan Knott-Craig: ‘Put Sentech's spectrum back in the market and let them go back to wherever they came from’

only a complete frontal lobotomy survivor would think that sentech might (again) make a go of a consumer play
if i were sentech management, i'd simply rent out the spectrum (assuming i could) and get money for doing nothing - i wonder if they would f even that up?

appears the threshold for ministerialness remains intact then.

they have done this - iirc they sub-allocated spectrum to global web intact (without permission from ICASA afaik) so, yes they have f'd even that up

From what I have heard a few companies have already tried this route without success. I have also heard that Sentech has very few skills left outside of its broadcasting division – I personally know of numerous of Sentech’s more skilled employees who have left to company and is now working for Neotel, IS, Vodacom etc. All of this really does not bode well for Sentech...

and therefore the question remains why o why is the Minister continuing to punt them?

to roll out a national WiMax network?
to roll out WiMax connectivity to 233 schools at a cost of R500 million (the initial phase)?

rotten rotten rotten

By the way what is the difference between Sentech and SAA - both of them seam to be draining tax payers with ease.

If only they can privitase the service offered by Sentech without milking the ordinary people.

AGREED!

Oh the irony...where does Paris Mashile's salary come from? - Poison Ivy holds !CASA's purse strings, if anything the Treasury Department is far more responsible than Poison Ivy is, it's no surprise that Paris Mashile is punting Poison Ivy's plan to throw money in Sentech's direction.

Sentech is currently the only terrestrial TV & radio signal distributor, and I don't think there is room for nor that there is a need for a competitor signal distributor - this is one service that IMO should not be privatised.

Poison Ivy wants Sentech to do something it is incapable of doing, namely - interacting with the public and providing the public with internet access - this was proved to be beyond Sentech's capabilities with its abortive MyWireless service. Poison Ivy claims that Sentech will be able to lower communications costs such that the poor will be able to afford Sentech's future broadband service, which is simply nonsense - especially if the technology used is WiMax - it will take a very long time for WiMax pricing to reduce to the point where very poor rural communities can afford WiMax modems and antennas and installation costs, there are other less cutting edge technologies that would be more appropriate to deploy in rural areas, that would also be using lower frequencies and would provide wider coverage and would require fewer base-stations which means lower deployment costs and therefore less expensive for rural communities to use.

If Sentech leases out spectrum to GWI, and Sentech is forced to recall its spectrum, then GWI will be in a real, tight spot...

Cry me a river... Leasing out spectrum would not do since whey they go down then what happens to that spectrum? It will just sit there for a few years till coverment decide what to do with it.

lol... So many skilled workers from Sentech have left or left the Country....
It's a disaster.. they are a disaster.. They should have their licence taken away, but then again no more free downloads at my friends house :P
