ICASA shortlist unveiled

Well done Debbie!!

An observation. I see you are listed as follows:
* Debbie Love: Heads up activist Web site Antitrust.co.za.
It might be better if you are considered "the nominated representative of the consumer interest group Antitrust.co.za" - unless you specifically want to be considered the leader of an activist group.

Two reasons.

The terms "nominated representative" and "interest group" are standard definitions when government looks at parties to consult, and

It looks like you're the only duly nominated representative capable of claiming a mandate from the consumer.

Ultimately, this forces them to accept you in the final group, otherwise risk being accused of refusing to take on genuine consumer party representation.

Use it, don't use it...

Yeah give us some addresses to send emails of support.

realistically though the three DOC nominations are guaranteed posts. so there are only two posts up for grabs....

My line of thought was similar when I saw the thread on a contentious nominee from the DOC. This line of thought was proven incorrect there. Chances are we'll see at least one DOC flunkie getting in, but not neccessarily all. That said, here's hoping none of them make it onto the list of 8.

Further: Dave A's considerations on how Debbie2 is represented have merit. I did notice one other member of a consumer body on the list, though:

* Ina Wilken: Serves as the chairperson of the SA National Consumer Council.

I am Dave's rising optimism.

Have the SA Consumer Council ever made a stink about Telkom?

Hey Debs congrats!

And when you get to the top, maybe hook MyADSL members up with 4mbps uncapped :D

Have the SA Consumer Council ever made a stink about Telkom?

...you make a good point. Can't find any information on the SANCU* in reference to communication costs or issues. The only Telkom-related info on their site consists of a few tips for using a Telkom line** and an admonishment to pay your Telkom account on time.

Even worse is their motto... "CONSULTATION BEFORE CONFRONTATION", ie., speak much and do nothing. She should fit right in.

Well done on your nomination, Debbie... even us lurkers are behind you. ;)

* Ina Wilken is chairperson of the South African National Consumers Union, not Council.

** Call in Callmore time, etc...

* Andrew Barendse: Worked in Telkom's regulatory affairs division and has completed a doctorate degree in Holland.

FFS. Telkom got a nominee in. I can just see that this guy's bank account is gonna get a significant boost everytime he opens his mouth.

Btw. Grats debbie.

If she gets the job maybe she can afford to keep her ADSL service at home.....congrats.

there seems to be alot of gov type people from DoC in that list, also only some on that list you wonder if you even need to be in the telecoms field. it is for ICASA right? I mean they will be expected to know things about the telecoms industry and not just take it from what Telkom etc tell them how things work. I'm hoping their desc is just written badly.

What, and ruin the trend of the current councillors? ;) Hmm, non-knowledgeable people who *seem* to be qualified might make the cut, and be easier to deal with from a ministerial/monopolistic point of view...

Why is there no [tinfoil-hat] smiley? :P

For clarity: was rpm excluded due to irregularity in his application, or just parliamentary fluff?
