I deleted a huge amount of stuff I no longer needed. I have an 8TB Mega account and it works great. The convenience of being able to access, add, remove and share files from any device is another huge benefit that sucks donkey balls with external hard drives.

The 2TB limit is bizarre, especially when Apple wants families to use Apple One and split the storage amongst themselves.

The convenience is great. The price not so much. 8TB would be too little for me. 40TB minimum. But, for this pricing is prohibitive and physical drives are the cheapest option and best thing to use. The world moved past the 2 or 10 or 20 TB requirement for space. We need a lot more than that today.

What I’d like to see is an option to exclude files/photos/videos from iCloud uploads.

The all or nothing approach is a storage burner at times especially from the Mac perspective.

I'm at the cusp of hitting the 200GB limit on our Family Plan after a year of use so to me it seems insane but every use case will vary. I don't use it on my work machine at all because not allowed to, so that may have changed the game.

I still pay for Google sub and Google Photos as I just prefer some things it does and the auto-partner sharing we use quite a bit with the kids.

Apple Family Sharing thing just seems a bit weird in the way it's a separate album and although I haven't actually tried it yet I have my reservations that I'd actually want to use it.

I have 1TB OneDrive storage from 365 Personal, 2TB Google Drive via Workspace, 8TB Mega for archiving files and 200GB from Apple One for family (which I briefly upgraded to 2TB a while back to try out as my primary service), but I still use Dropbox 99% of the time.

It just works, sharing is easier, the API doesn't suck, syncing on Mac is more reliable in my experience, integrations are better, and in general it gives me zero problems. I'm happy to pay for that convenience.

Where does most of that 2TB go to though? For me it's predominantly Photos and as such 2TB goes a hell of a long way.

My work machines is also Google Workspace predominantly with only my personal using iCloud Drive and so very little in the way of big data, mostly a couple of documents here and there I might have submitted with hand written notes or some such. I actually still have a lot of Google Drive stuff I need to move over to iCloud but it's all pretty small fry.

There's an API for iCloud? (I mean I'm sure there is) but more like what do you use it for?
 
2TB is nothing if you’re shooting in RAW and recording in 4K 60 fps.

That being said you’re not obligated to use iCloud Photos. Just turn it off and store the photos on a medium of your choice whether that be a different - cheaper - cloud or disk drive.

Click iCloud settings, uncheck photos.

Or you want something more discrete in terms of choosing which to upload?

If so, yes, me three.

Client files for the most part. My older photo library is archived in Mega and all newer stuff is in iCloud. Storage isn't an issue yet but I'll probably need to upgrade later this year.

I use Dropbox for quite a bit:
  • Scheduled website backups for friends, family and smaller clients
    • The expiration of GDrive auth used to drive me nuts
  • Regular file storage obviously
  • Sharing files
  • By switching the 0 at the end of share links to a 1, the file will download automatically, which means I can hotlink the s**t out of my Dropbox account. I use this extensively for spinning up website blueprints, importing images when syncing inventory for Ecom clients etc. Unlike other file storage services, things don't grind to a halt or start timing out when you do this.
  • Dropbox works the best of all the cloud services for syncing inventory files as well. Smaller Ecom clients aren't geared up with ERP systems or fancy integrations, so keeping a spreadsheet up to date and having it auto-sync a few times a day makes their lives about as easy as possible.
  • Integrations with Slack, Zapier, Adobe, Zoom etc. Probably nothing unique but they work great and the connections don't expire.
  • Secure document sending and storage
  • Automatic watermarking
  • Collecting signatures from clients
  • All my local dev work saves to Dropbox locations
All the cloud storage services have an API but the only one that doesn't depress me is the Dropbox one.

Can you even upload RAW to iCloud Photos?

No no, I love iCloud Photos don’t want to turn it off.

Just don’t want to necessarily put everything on iCloud so the option to deselect from uploading/syncing is what I want.

Or even just an Album that doesn’t sync would be fine.
