I use Dropbox for quite a bit:
  • Scheduled website backups for friends, family and smaller clients
    • The expiration of GDrive auth used to drive me nuts
  • Regular file storage obviously
  • Sharing files
  • By switching the 0 at the end of share links to a 1, the file will download automatically, which means I can hotlink the s**t out of my Dropbox account. I use this extensively for spinning up website blueprints, importing images when syncing inventory for Ecom clients etc. Unlike other file storage services, things don't grind to a halt or start timing out when you do this.
  • Dropbox works the best of all the cloud services for syncing inventory files as well. Smaller Ecom clients aren't geared up with ERP systems or fancy integrations, so keeping a spreadsheet up to date and having it auto-sync a few times a day makes their lives about as easy as possible.
  • Integrations with Slack, Zapier, Adobe, Zoom etc. Probably nothing unique but they work great and the connections don't expire.
  • Secure document sending and storage
  • Automatic watermarking
  • Collecting signatures from clients
  • All my local dev work saves to Dropbox locations
All the cloud storage services have an API but the only one that doesn't depress me is the Dropbox one.

Yeah as a business tool Dropbox, Box and the rest all make a lot of sense.

iCloud is a personal tool though and was never marketed as a business use case so it’s not really oranges and oranges.

It’s mean to be an easy option for Joe Average to keep his stuff safe and synced between devices and at that it excels.

Or even just an Album that doesn’t sync would be fine.

So, more discrete settings...

Apple would obviously rather sell us more storage, vs allow us to choose (as it wouldn't be hard to add those settings).
Shitty, but thats what it is.

I prefer self owned storage vs "cloud". I use syncthing to sync up my machines with each other on a geographical basis. Locally, and offshore to China where most of my storage and servers sit. If cloud were cheaper, I'd move some of that to VPS's in Digital Ocean, but it isn't, so I don't.

Still cheaper to buy physical storage and host, vs cloud, and safer too. Less downtime..

I have an 18TB redundant array in my garage and I wouldn’t trust it to look after my family photos over iCloud.

Both for safety and simply accessibility.

Nothing is as easy as iCloud and doesn’t require jumping through any hoops or compromising somewhere in an all Apple house.

I still use Google Photos as a secondary for now.
 
I upgraded my iCloud storage space only to setup my new phone that was in December I now don't need all that space and im trying to downgrade and it wont allow me to. Has anyone experienced this before? I have deleted everything from iCloud
 
I know its a little bit of money I just don't need the storage its a waste I thought it would just continue trying to bill me Screenshot 2024-01-20 at 7.14.02 PM.png
