With Firefox working SO well on Ubuntu as well as Windows, I really have no need for IE at all - hence IE may as well vanish.

People still actually use IE6, are they or what?

Develop for a set of standards, not a browser, I say. Still have to see how IE8 fits into that.

I never liked IE from the beginning, can't remember what version, but it pushed me to Netscape, and now Firefox. Only use that excuse for a browser when I am forced to.

Let me enlighten you.

Windows 2000 and any pre release of Windows before XP only supports IE6, if I'm not mistaken 95 only supports 5. So MS shot themselves in the foot.

Great thing is, you can load FF and Chrome on Windows 2000 and even use IETab (extension) in FF to load newer sites on 2000.

We've got a few 2000 Pro pc's at work, less than 10 and I've had to do this a few times already, works a charm.

MS made sure IE8 work on XP and it works quite well. For many companies that rely on .Net based WebApps IE will always take preference. There are many issues in the other browsers that make it hard for certain developers to cater for it, think of time purely. It takes longer to iron out the issues and code for the non MS browsers, than just coding for IE and if it works, your work is done. Remember also that most of these developing apps are made by MS, so they cater for their own browser as well.

I'm not insinuating, even slightly that there's something wrong with Chrome or FF, I'm just saying, when weighing the costs and effort and time involved, if I were a developer I would also just go the IE route.

Great thing is that FF and Chrome are actually built to be compatible with IE only rendered content, so they've filled the gap too, not as much as I'd like, but on many scenarios.

Firefox did NOT increase it's market share by 10.2% from 16.2% to 28.8%. Very simple arithmetic shows a market share increase of 61.4%...

Yes, I use that. But it seems our IT department can't be bothered.

All Firefox sites are blocked here at work. I have to download it at home and bring it with a USB stick when I want to install/update it.

IE6 is the only approved browser. All others (including 7 and 8) are banned.

Perhaps if you set your other browser as the default.

FF is my default but IE still loads on certain clicked links.

Perhaps its in the code of the sent emails? The Business Report email newsletter is a classic example. Kalahari.net is another.

Opera 10 beta 2 just installed on my PC (auto update from beta 1) and it is the best browser in the galaxy. After years they have finally fixed the rich text edit box for gmail and it seems not to take Shift as a keystroke when I need to log on to my internet banking.
