I agree with you totally and utterly.

I too will be sending a formal complaint to the IEC, and this kind of misapropriation should be accountable in parliament at the very least.

BLOCK EVERYONE FROM THE SITE.

At least that is not discriminatory.

And as for the R3mill? Bugger - what a joke.

Maybe this is Phase 1 of Project Fix Elections.org.za: Ensure equal accessibility by removing access.

Phase 2: Build proper site - that will be another R3 mill.

Yep, looks like it's gone completely. Now we can't even read the info for the 2006 elections :(

Phase 3: Edit content -Find and replace "2006" with "2009" - that will be a couple more million. Life is good

I wonder how much they paid for their current rubbish site? Anyone know?

IMO it looks like a MS Frontpage knockup with a little bit of Photoshop for effect (ie the voting box, fantastic [/sarcasm], but probably shockingly expensive :eek:).

btw, for those of us abroad, I contacted the IEC by phone (I know, the old-fashioned way...), and I was told there will be another registration weekend in February. I'm having my vote
 
Email to IEC:
I just wanted to add my support to those who are pleading with the IEC to make the IEC website open-source compliant, so that people who have not bought Microsoft products may also be able to access the IEC website.

I believe that 3 million Rand has been earmarked for making the website compliant - this is an excessive amount of money for the task at hand - in fact, it smells of corruption and people skimming money "off the top". As a public body, I assume the IEC is publicly audited and is also subject the to Public Finance Management Act: therefore I sincerely request that the IEC adheres to the law and the principles of good governance when spending the public's money on upgrading the website. I will say it again, R3 million is excessive and I find it hard to see how that pricetag can be justified for the task at hand.

Suggest that others too mail them about the cost. The purpose of doing so would be to add pressure for good governance.

6.1. Does the budget allow for further enhancements other than open-source compliance?
6.2. Further to the improvements above (if any), will the budget allow of value added services such as online registration and voting?
7. Would the IEC make available the Request For Proposal, as well as any conceptual, design and technical documentation relating to the new website, for public scrutiny? This would enable interested paries to make informed comments about the proposed project.

As Chief Information Officer of the Commission, I trust you will have the requested information at hand.
