... what do you think the end result would be?

Chatted to a few people at work about this, and some say an increase in hijacking - while others say it would be a good move, as it would stop te casual guy from stealing a car on impulse.

I think they will make it compulsory one day - with all phones having A-GPS. We will have a good alibi I suppose, but the problem is that it's open to abuse. There is no guarantee it won't be used for other purposes, not to mention the privacy issue.

The hijackers would have a plant in the radio/tracking room of the company; if fact won't be surprised if they already do!

If the jacks had access to the tracking system, they'd know where to find any car they needed.

Why invest so much money in trackers, insurance, armed security and such? I say emigrate, best investment you can ever make. Seriously, how much money are you wasting on all these so called defensive mechanism that won't make much of a difference anyway. Whatever you do here in SA, it's like reorganising the deck chairs on the Titanic before it goes down.

And go where? Australia and the UK both have higher car theft rates than we do.

It's sinking slowly, but as long as we noticed it, then we're ok.

You don't drown by jumping in the water, you drown by staying there.

At the point of a gun and at the cost of your life? highly unlikey. i'be be more worried about Australia's white trash population in the rural areas. Fack, its like the an american southern hick, a trailer park trash and the people form the east rand rolled into one.

Bullsh*t.

Most people where i live in the UK dont even know what a hijacking is. The only car thefts are kids taking easy to break into cars for joy rides.

BTW they classify that (kids joy-riding) as "CAR THEFT". Slightly different to the murdering bullet-in-the-head "theft" you get in SA...

would the people that abandoned the country please keep their "stuff" to themselves, and not try and compare SA with other countries!!!

The best option for security in terms of cars are cameras. Many cars have cameras that can show you the rear view of your bumper for parking purposes and some new cars like the Opel Insignia in Europe and the new Mercedes E-Class have cameras that can even read road signs.

What I think would be best is if you have the ability to remotely see where your car is at using these cameras.

Second lyI think they should have the same inside the car, a facial recognition camera is mounted with a good view of the driver - you can tell it who to allow as drivers - else it won't start. If you are hijacked it can be used to identify the criminals.

Insurance companies will love the part of who is allowed to drive the car and you will love the part to be able to see inside and outside your car from pretty much anywhere. The technology is pretty cheap too - just look at how cheap you can get 3G phones with video call ability.

Anybody here use Trackmate? You can track your GPS's movements from the internet or your cellphone for free. You have register (also free) and log in to see your GPS position and can even create a group to see where your friends are and chat to them if they're logged on.

Just like Need for Speed.

I

Don't like any form of biometric recognition in a car.

Read a story a few years ago that a guy was jacked in Malaysia. His new Merc used fingerprint recognition to start.

They took his thumb with them.

(Suppose better than a bullet in the head)
