Johannesburg - EFF leader Julius Malema has hinted that the party might relent and vote with the DA to make its candidate, Herman Mashaba, Johannesburg mayor.

Malema told 702 on Wednesday afternoon that ANC mayoral candidate Parks Tau would definitely not be mayor, and although the EFF had strong objections to Mashaba, if he were to be elected, "so be it".
Malema said the EFF did not like Mashaba because "he hates his blackness" and because of his perceived disrespect for the poor.

Malema also said Mashaba did not have sufficient experience to govern Johannesburg.

Speaking to News24 earlier on Wednesday, Mashaba said if the DA asked him to step down, he would "do it yesterday".

But he also said the EFF's condition was strange and awkward.

"How did they expect the DA to respond to something like this? I have been put through very rigorous processes and campaigned for more than 18 months. Maybe they know something we don't know. Maybe the EFF has a valid reason for setting this condition. It's just very awkward."

DA leader Mmusi Maimane earlier at a media conference confirmed that the EFF had objected to voting with the DA for Mashaba, but said that his party had "institutions" it had to respect and as Mashaba was its candidate, it could not put up someone else.

Eating the elephant that is the ANC

He said, however, that he also did not want to see the ANC govern Johannesburg, "because otherwise I would not be in politics".

Malema told 702 that even though "irritations" remained with the DA, working with the party was the only way that the opposition "can eat that elephant that is the ANC bit by bit".

Speaking in Alexandra earlier on Wednesday afternoon, Malema told reporters that the red berets would not be going into coalitions with any party but would vote with certain parties in various councils.

The DA is set to go into a coalition with various opposition parties that would allow it to govern Nelson Mandela Bay metro, and the EFF has undertaken to vote with the party in Tshwane so that Solly Msimanga can become the mayor there.

A beaming Maimane told reporters that the DA had agreed on coalitions with Cope, the ACDP, FF Plus, UDM and the IFP for 27 hung councils around the country.

He said the DA had tried to negotiate with the EFF, but "it's quite clear that we will never agree on some ideological issues".

I hope they elect Herman Mashaba and there won't be any issues from the EFF side.

He worked hard to campaign for the DA and he needs to be given a chance. He is a humble man. If he doesn't cut it, I'm sure the DA will replace him.

so the founder of the company Black Like Me "hates his blackness"....

I would like to see how Mr Mashaba's credentials compare to the EFF and cANCer candidates. My guess would be that he is more than capable to do the job.

Mashaba is a respectable person, I would like to see him as mayor.

However, I know what part of this doesn't sit well with the EFF. Mashaba has been known to say that BBBBBEEEEEE is not a feasible economic standard and is actually racist. He also said that being poor and elected in government is not a good idea. I understand his what he means.

Like Zuma with his "clever blacks" remarks, this is just a way for small-minded men to diminish the worth of those who think and act differently than them.

Seems like the DA did not take to heart the lesson that the Mamphela Ramphele should have taught them. Mashaba will be a disaster of a mayor.

There is no way Mashaba is better than Parks Tau. Mashaba is a political novice.

I can't wait for him to prove you wrong.

Why the actual **** do you think a politician would be better at running a city than a successful CEO?

You're just terrified that your personal gods are going to be shown to be the corrupt, inept morons that they really are.

One of the big problems with politics today is that the people who are drawn to power are precisely the people you don't want IN power.

Someone with business acumen enough to be CEO of a major company would usually not be interested in a "low paying" political appointment. It's a coup of note IMHO.

+1

Seems people hate him because he's successful

And because he's not actually a racist, unlike Malema. His interview on 702 is a bit fear-inducing if you're a white person. He will ship us all off to some island tomorrow if he had the power.

I believe Malema will do far more damage to this country than Zuma has or could ever do.

Yeah. He demands free water, electricity and education for the poor, and wants to nationalise banks and mines because they are run by white people.

Somebody has to pay for the free stuff, and the mines and banks are providing millions of jobs. These whites that run mines, banks etc. pay a massive part of the grants. If he takes away from the wealthy and put it into the hands of people who don't know what they're doing, you'll lose both.

I guess he's fine if we all live in shacks with no grants and definitely no jobs then.

Why not just demand government assist with job creation for all, help companies expand and relieve them from unnecessary taxes so that they can pay more employees, or pay current employees more? Rhetorical.

Depends how far he gets.
So far, I'd say he's done a lot of good (possibly unintentionally) - he's the one who's broken the ANC's iron fist.
