Illegal speed trapping tonight!

Coming from a friend's birthday party in Wetton, on the M5, after Access Park, they are speed trapping.

You can't see the guys as they are all dressed in black.

Isn't this illegal? Aren't they supposed to be visible from 30m or something? (so, instead of wearing black, they must wear yellow or something)

Either way, just warning ya guys.
 
No. There are not supposed to be anything. You are supposed to stick to the traffic rules. Have you got a idea how many motor vehicle accidents happened in your area over the last 24H? Ask your local police station (tel 10111) You are saying you are coming from a party and is late at night. Can you imagine how 'nice' it must be to stand next to the road for hours on end, ensuring that most people get where they want to get without incidents? Given the choice, I too would like to come or go to a party. Destiny dictates otherwise. Think about that if you see them in the middle of the night next to the road. But then again, you might not see them . . . Especially if you come from a party with a 'heavy' head and doing 120 in a 60 zone. :D I don't mean you do that at all . Plenty people do just that and some never get where they intended to go. A few thousand a year fall in that category . . . Makes one think doesn't it? I hope that one day in the not to distant future, a hitech satelitte or similar, will monitor the speed of each and every vehicle in the world (Africa included) and as soon as you go above the limit, money will be deducted from your pay. If you are not happy, you can go to court on the date shown on your pay slip where the money should have been showing. :D

Don't know about the legality of it all, but they should be wearing yellow reflective outfits to avoid being hit by traffic and posing a danger to themselves and other road users.

Secondly they should be visible to act as a deterrent. The primary role of policing is law enforcement and the primary way of doing that is by deterring crime from occurring - being visible is one way this happens.

Hiding in the bushes and catching speeding cars in order to enrich the coffers is not policing.
 
+1000 to what peter said. Exactly what i wanted to say. For them its now a business to find new ways to make money instead of preventing people from breaking the law. They need to be visible that way people will not speed

Nope, it does not help. The idiots only reduce the speed for a few 100m. After that is 'pedal to the metal'. The best are mobile, hidden cameras and very hi traffic fines. Also people should be locked up without bail for drunk driving, until they appear in court. (that can mean for the whole weekend if infringement happened on a Friday night) I believe new guidelines are on the way. Visible patrols only show to the 'criminal mind', where the cops are. At our station, most arrests are done by the 'gang police' . (a group of 3-5 plain clothed policeman which look and talk more like gangsters then anything als)
 
It is illegal. They are not allowed to hide and by wearing black in the dark they are flippin hiding.

I believe that he asked whether it was legal, not for a lesson on what people should or shouldn't be doing. He didn't admit to speeding anyway :)

You seem to advocating some fascist views there.

Have governments actually looked at the cause of accidents? Well believe it or not according to the UK Transport Research Laboratory, speed has been implicated as only 7% of the factors involved in car accidents (in the UK) and speed was the primary factor in only 4.3% of the cases (see Link.)

In Australia, they found that: "The federal road safety action plan, for instance, estimates that safer roads - not changing driver behaviour - would have the biggest single impact on the road toll and could save more than 300 lives a year nationally."

In countries such as Sweden and Britain, which boast the lowest road fatality rates in the world, speed cameras must be openly displayed, even painted bright yellow, and secretly filming drivers would be nearly as shocking as pointing a lens through the bedroom window.

It seems an easy scapegoat to blame speed but speed is relative and depends on the driver, car and road conditions (wet, iced over, poor visibility or at an intersection). What is more important is vehicle, driver attentiveness and the state of the roads.

Lambert re-analysed the Adelaide figures and claimed that the traditional theory of the best speed being the average speed still applied, although his own graph also showed a dramatic jump in risk for people travelling more than 15 km/h over the limit in a 60 zone. In metropolitan areas, Lambert says, the greatest risk is at intersections, where people are turning or where they are speeding through red-light cameras, not on the stretches of road where private contractors set up mobile speed cameras.

Visible policing, improvement of roads, getting rid of poorly maintained vehicles, getting rid of reckless (not just speeding) drivers and not blanket 'ghost squad' policing and other fascist behaviour are the answers.

All to often I see fixed cameras on long straight wide stretches of road around Cape Town. We often also see speed limits dropped artificially to 60km/h in an effort to nab drivers. In the linked article they found that the vast majority of speed infringers were going only a few km/h over the limit.

Speed doesn't kill. It's normally the sudden stop that does the killing. I don't know if they (the new gwavamunt) changed the laws but in the old days there used to be silly rules like if the Oink wasn't wearing white gloves when they wave you down you didn't have to stop. I love law! It's so..... flexable.
 
AFAIK they are meant to be visible and not meant to be trapping be "laser" at night. (don't know if laser was used in this case - pissed and just read the opening line or two)

You and your chommies need to get in touch with your primary objectives, and no, it's not to generate revenue.

Get out there and patrol and stop the main causes of the unsafe road conditions, such as taxi's and others, but that's too much like work isn't it?

Visible policing is the way to go, as Peter pointed out, but that's means a little more than your chommies are accustomed to.

Isn't this back-to-front reasoning? A good driver adjusts to the prevailing road conditions.
