I'm DSTV-free

Infrastructure wise we are first world. He was referring to our technology by saying ADSL and the like, which is found in cities.

Since you added substantiation, here from a paper on south africa as first/third world country:
South Africa is an interesting though complicated country in Africa , and clearly show s the coexistence of “first” and “third” world. Before 1994, a parthe id South Africa was defined by only four provinces and in these provinces were “ Black Reserves ” referred to as homelands. Now, a fter 1994, South Africa is m ade up of nine provinces that have both urban and rural areas , and the “ Black Reserves ” no longer exist. The rural areas are extremely deprived of resources and infrastructure. They represent what one might designate as a “ third world country ” within a country , compared with the urban areas that have resources fit to be classified as those of the “ first world ” . In the neighbouring vicinity (approximately 5 kilometres ) of urban South African cities are townships that were underdeveloped by the apartheid government. Even the townships in the urban areas were deprived of general public service resources, education and other forms of infrastructure. Hence the “ first” and “ third” world then coexisted 5 kilomet res apart and this is one of the challenges facing the post - 1994 government in South Africa. Urban dwellers in various townships therefore share simi lar challenges with their counterparts in various parts of the continent , namely, the limited access to the Internet, and this has a negative impact on the access to global knowledge.

Open up a unit trust account with a reputable authorised financial services provider. Although you may not feel the benefit of it today, you will be grateful in years from now that you made the move to increase your savings. Start with half of the amount if you don't want to use it all.

Otherwise I would use it to reduce any debt you have.

Else consider saving toward a dream holiday.

+1 for this

I am hoping that pay TV will also go the route broadband has by becoming cheaper as we move along. Not quite the same thing I know, but with new competition on the rise it could very well be.

For me, I still got my little MNET decoder and I pay R314 pm for MNET - I do this so I can watch the rugby and other sports and my family watch some shows on there - Masterchef SA and so on. And the I have my R420 2Mbps uncapped and I get what WE want to watch - all comes at the same as DTSV Premium.

I gave up Dstv as well a few years ago. Apart from missing the sport, which lets be honest, this is the main reason most people have dstv in the 1st place.

Years ago and many years that is, the SABC had F1, Wimbledon, Golf, showed PL highlights etc and it wasnt that big a deal to have dstv or mnet. Today you can stream or download a movie for very little, and even stream a full football game. I got a Drifta, and dont pay anything for it as its registered under my dads name who has the full boquet. So i still get Blitz, SS1, SS2, SS3 and SS4. For me im happy with that. :-)

The bottom line is that DSTV are ripping off people by the prices they charge, but knowing that people will pay for it, because they cant do without it
