Ok,So im officially stuck.Ive been doing a bsc computer science at uwc.I failed maths yet again(third time) got a 44, if it even matters.Re-admission is apparently not allowed.
Im going to try and talk to my parents, hopefully theyll take it well.

I do not know what to do or where to go.Im a decent dev and can compile a decent portfolio and cv and all in a day or two with all the projects ive got.Im mainly backend dev though.Should I get a job starting next year, should i apply to listings on indeed.I really do value educations, but if maths is kicking my ass this hard i really dont know if im worth being a student at another varsity.I really appreciate any help ,anything i get from this thread.Im currently sitting on my bed at 1:40am writing this, which shows the severity of this ordeal.

Thanks.

HeftyCrab,is it possible to apply at the beginning of 2020.

Check out Unisa’s website to see when you can register. I think it is open right through the year now.

Applications normally open in Jan/Feb. You will have to go in to get credits for your other subjects though.

You should be able to work and do a few subjects.

Also would you recommend diving into indeed and applying to some listings.

As @phoneJunky mentioned they now have an "open model" for applications so you can apply at any time. Whether you can start beginning of 2020 is something only they will be able to answer. I advise going into their nearest office to you, if possible, if you have a question. Seeing as you studied at uwc it would be the Parow office. Just check if they are open during the festive season.

There is also a massive Unisa thread here for questions with many helpful people:

LoL!
The question is, how hard did he try to pass?

If he can honestly say he busted his balls, then c'est la vie. I can't imagine being a decent dev and not being able to pass math if you really tried.
It depends on the maths. I also struggled with tertiary maths, did fine with complex numbers, partial differentiation, statistics, and some integration but the purer theorems, etc gave me problems. None of the higher maths I learned, I've used except maybe the stats part. I'm sure it's used more in some cases but there is plenty of development without.

Can you not continue with your degree but enroll for an equivalent course through unisa and try to get credit that way? I haven't heard of a Uni blocking you for failing one subject - unless it is required for the next course, which, given that they've given 4 chances, I doubt it the case.

Did you pass everything else?

If he failed it 3 times then I guess it is first year maths that would probably be a prerequisite for quite a few subjects or at least a co-requisite.

It is not about specific divisions of maths. It is about developing an ability to think and reason in a methodical and ordered way.
Just put aside the time and concentrate on that one subject only, you will crack it.

There are many folks who are logical and methodical without being mathematically inclined and I was talking about pure maths. Maths that you apply ( used to be called Applied Maths back in the day, couple decades ago now ) should be easy for anyone wanting to do development but I get a massive headache with pure mathematics. Give me a nice electrical or temperature based problem where one has to apply or adapt predefined theorems correctly, I'm happy but the items like Integration by Partial Fractions where you basically guess a number and narrow down the guesses, taking reams of paper ( no calculators folks ), were not my thing. Even took the plunge and tried learning quantum mechanics on my own, loved the theory but the maths killed me.

All that said, probably if I was to go back and do maths now after a decent refresher, I'd kill it. Mental maturity is also a thing.

Watch out. You will be judged here.....

I would start working and maybe consider Unisa if they offer the subject you want to do. They give marks much easier. But you will need to get help somewhere I guess. Maths is a tricky one...... Sorry man. All of the best. Don't give up.

Did you do Mat1 and Mat2?

I failed my first year 40% for calculus. Rewrote it and got 55%. Second year I failed again, rewrote it and failed again, then retook Mat2 and passed with 67%. Also never been able to finish the 2nd semester exams. They're damn fast.

All this while nailing it in informatics and computer science with marks above 90% some exams even 100% and took Physics 87% etc...

Calculus exams can be really hard.
