iMac & Antivirus

Having worked at a iStore doing conversions for switcher's I can tell you that Mac's do get infected. What happens is that if the drive is formatted FAT32 it's "impossible" to delete infected directory's. Solution "sudo rm /Folder/ *.*"

by pc viruses on a fat32 drive?

Agree with Bwana - NOT going to install a virus for the benefit of Windows users.

Sounds like you really, really have to want a virus.
And the viruses don't seem to be able to do anything bad.

How did the drive get "infected"? Was it originally in a windows machine and subsequently installed in a mac?

At least you found a "solution" for your "impossible" problem. :)

It's the only way to quickly get data off the PC and onto the Mac on old PC's that are difficult to connect a Ethernet calbe to for PC to Mac data transfer.

No, it was just an external drive we used to copy data from PC to Mac.
Reason why it was FAT32 is so that we could wipe the data once it had been transfered. (Not possible to delete NTFS folders) so as soon as the FAT32 drive got connected to a virus infected PC the entire drive was infected and therefore it was difficult to delete infected folder's.

macFuse will let you modify ntfs drives.
you can always remove what you need from the drive and reformat or write zeros with dd.
Cost To Company was obviously a factor in taking the low tech road.

Anti-Virus for Mac

I have had my mac for close to a month now, and would like to know if I should be running any anti-virus on it. I did a quick search and it came up with a thread from 2 years ago, I think that is a bit outdated so I decided to start a new one. From what i hear, mac viruses are very rare and that if I do want an anti-virus I should go for nortons. Anyone here use an anti-virus on their Mac, or ever seen a Mac virus ?

Mod_note: threads merged - not much has changed on the mac virus prevalence front since October - afaik there still arent any in the wild.
