OK - well we've sent off all our tickets and pings, speed-tests comparison blah blah blah to IS management.

Let's see what happens!
I'll be following up with a few emails and phone calls soon I think.

It's a bit concerning at the minute as well. There's a discussion going on in the ISPA forum chat whereby people are also now saying that the IS product is not good enough. However, a non-IS retaliation has been 'wait until MWeb get enough custoemrs to start contending'... MWeb have 150,000 users of a 600,000 ADSL market. If they're not contending now then they never will!

I am starting to get more and more concerned that there are very few 'technical companies' in the market space. Just companies who overbrand other people's products. If this is the case then the transparency issue will never be a good one to them. Also, the need to earn money from an ADSL product will be essential... Therefore, with IS having to make a profit and the reseller having to make more of a profit - it's not going to advance this market at speed unless people change.

@ppedrick
If the current 'uncapped' solution cannot be sustained in SA, then the solution would be to offer a lesser shaped/throttled/capped product at the same price. I would guess that the majority of those who signed up for th uncapped would be better satisfied for a capped product which is less restrictive. I know I would. I don't mind shaped during peak times, but connection rates of 10kb/s would not be acceptable, the service needs to be useable.

I wonder how Australia, New Zealand, Mauritius, Nigeria and others cope?

I truly agree with you, bekdik..... I come from having a 1/2/3GB intl cap and a 30GB IS local cap (which remained intl if you kept the session running). This cost me from R160 to R190 a month. Sure it's by no means a massive cap, but I was able to do my business and download what I needed at the full capability of my line.

But a decision like this needs to be made on behalf of the client base, by the ISPs, for better. Not for worse (which has been the case elsewhere).

Hi

Please listen to me , i hear what you're saying that the account is not throttled.

But my god , it is!!! after 30 gigs it went SLOW to 512kbps max.

In your terms it says web and email will not be affected , but everything is 512 maximum ? so clearly that is throttled ?

I keep on saying this but i just keep on getting the "oh its not throttled" answer ? You must on http downloads , it bursts as i start it and comes down rappidly to sit on exactly 55kb/sec , it doesnt move.

Same for email , torrents , etc

Hey Dravenza - I've forwarded this feedback to the IS management as well. It would be pretty damning if it were true... however, in their defense we are running several accounts here in the office and at employee's homes and they have just noticed the terrible and variable speeds and not speed changes at certain levels. Again, i've passed this on and also we're now looking in to it. As we are also trying to use/abuse the system to find the wholes we should have picked this up before now.

There are potentially a number of reasons for the bursts - IPC overload, DSLAM overload, network overload, shaping changes and issues, throttling, exchange issues etc. etc... PM me your ADSL line number and username and we'll try and loko in to it from this side. We are lucky to have the infrastructure we do to be able to check things quite extensively before passing on the problem. I'm off hom in 20 minute and then appeasing my gf for lack of contact this evening - so please copy in the helpdesk at imagine.co.za as well and I'll try and follow it up tonight/tomorrow.

RE: The level of service and sustainability
I do honestly believe that ADSL provision can be maintained at this price. What I also believe is that we have the wrong pricing models, infrastructure models and business practises in place to sustain it within 'old business'... This has to change. Maybe a gradual change could have been better but the pent up constriction of this market could only really lead to the massive tidal wave of usage we are now seeing. From now on it's all about what we do with it....

We were asked yesterday if IS released a 'decent' product on to the market for R200 more would we sell it and people buy it... despite contradicts from others I said 'yes!'... people are so desperate that they will pay more for quality... however, it is not the answer and these short-term business fixes are not the way to be looking at this.

What does seem to have been seriously lacking in SA, and its very likely a result of the millions of small businesses, is proper business modelling and planning. The small scale businesses that buy from the larger companies can not insist on streamlining and QoS and the large companies get fat and complacent ebcause they aren't pushed compeitively or economically... again... good 'ol MWeb... this might make some changes that can only start a chain reaction in this country. I intend to do my part to help that.
Cheers P.

Peter , you guys are a great isp

I had your afterhours capped service for a bit , worked perfectly.

Hey at 5pm my speed instantly switched over ? not gradually as some people are still leaving work etc , http download went from 55kb/sec to 200kb/sec.

Im pretty sure this whole weekend is going to be good speeds, then come monday we'll be having weird speed issues again.

At the moment im happy to be moving some megs :D

If the IS management don't understand the problem, why not give them an Imagine uncapped and in return, they will agree to use only that account for Internet use as of Monday 08:00 for 5 days.

I guarantee the problem will be fixed within 2 days!

:D

We should try that with Telkom too.... make them use a 384 line for a month.....

i don't get it, how come i am only getting 34K on my 384k account? i know for the fact that it should be 38k. 4k doesn't seem like much but its 4k non the less!
EDIT: well i know its IS's fault, just though i should bring it up. appreciate it if "ppedrick" mention this to IS people.

Getting 40KBps this morning. Speeds are quite okay...... but it's just Steam that I'm struggling with.... :(

Http full speed, torrents craaaaaawling ;)

To be expected though , Have to get my friend from down the road to download the new spartacus episode from me with his Mweb Uncapped at full speed on torrents :P

384 account, still not there

Yes very frustratinly, I am seeing SLOWER speeds than the 384kbps guys... Around 25kb all night last night and still this morning.

Peter has been great, but this product is absolutely TERRIBLE. Speaking of, Peter what did IS say about rebates for the 4meg customers getting a 384kb product?

Ppedrick said something in the lines of it's unfortunately not going to happen (because the ISPs pay for the account whether it gets used or not).

I guess thats fair enough!

I dont think these 4 meg accounts should ever have been sold in the first place!
