Rebooted router and all of a sudden:

Mine's been running fine all day. Finally managed to log into Steam, too. Ping becomes a monstrocity though.

Better, but maybe it's just cause of the weekend...

Hahaha im still getting 23kbps :O :O

As much as I've hated this account and I dont feel my money was well spent, I have to say I respect ppedrick for coming back here time and time again, getting all our frustrations dumped on him, taking the beatings, the accusations, the lashings... It's not his fault and it's not his company, but he didnt **** off and leave us bitching and moaning on deaf ears.

Thanks for all your efforts ppedrick!!!

+1

also wanted to say that pings are extremely good, one connection downloads are superb, but i am only getting max speed of 32k, last night was 40k. its varied but the connection is always strong (384K account)

What is the situation should telkom upgrade connection speeds? Hey, anything is possible :)

For instance, should telkom upgrade all 384 to 512, say, will I be restricted to 384 on an Imagine 384 uncapped, or will the imagine 384 also be upgraded to 512 at the same price?

I would also like an answer to that..... it really was strange seeing uncapped come out shortly before our lines are (hopefully) being upgraded.

Morning guys - apologies for the lack of contact but thought it would make you laugh to know my internet connection was down all weekend! I WiMax to the office at the minute as there seems to be a loooong waiting list to get an ADSL line.

Keen to know how you Monday morning connection are?
Seems that the weekend was good and bad but still by no means decent.

RE: the Telkom upgrade speeds I'm not sure anyone knows yet. I have no idea why but they do like to play things close to their chest and then let everyone panic afterwards.
Personally, I'm hoping for no connection speeds and one simple price for ADSL - abut I doubt that it will happen. What I mean by that is that you get whatever speed your distance to the exchange will allow... e.g. 1Mpbps up to 8/10Mbps limiter. It really will make life a lot easier in the country and people won't have to become IT experts just to get an internet line.

Sure some people will feel cheated as they are not full line speed but leveling the marketpalce would be a good start to getting thsi country 'up to speed'.

Hey ppedrick!

Weekend speeds TERRIBLE for me... all weekend I was downloading between 20 and 34kbps... Not up to scratch!

Last night at 00:00 my speeds suddenly kicked off... Speeds were erratic, but between 220 and 400kbps, fastest I've had on the account this month... Pity it was only for a few hours tho ;)

Good morning Ppedrik

I personally had pretty decent (the best yet) speeds over the weekend. Steam finally started working on Saturday aftenoon (it's still working now even, yes, during business hours).
Speeds this morning are so-so. Sitting at 25KBps while downloading a Micro$oft trial, a game trailer off Steam (uses a set p2p port afaik) and Firefox browsing.

This will NEVER happen, because Telkom can squeeze every last penny out of it's customers by offering differing line speeds.

@froot yeah... unacceptable for a 4meg line man :( When I switch over to my 5gig capped mweb account it FLIES, then switch back to Imagine uncapped account and it DIES ;)

@ppedrick

My question about speed wasn't related to what Telkom will do, but rather what Imagine will do. Currently Imagine offer uncapped in different speed related products.

It is predicted that Telkom will, at some stage, increase line speeds, with the expectation along the lines of 384 => 512, 512 => 1024 (4096), 1024 (4096) => 8192

Some ISP's have stated that should this speed upgrade take place, their users will then be throttled by the ISP to the purchased speed. So, if I purchase 384 from these guys and Telkom moves me to 512 my internet speed will be held at 384 by said ISP. Would Imagine also hold the hold my speed at 384?

Sorry Bekdik - I mis-read the question.

Short answer is "I have no idea' as again, we just resell a Tier 1 ADSL product.
We need to sell a decent ADSL product so we can transfer our business solutions on to ADSL home customers and I don't believe it's our job to provide 'the connection'. You have a company who deals with 75% of ALL South African internet traffic... Internet Solutions. They should be more than capable of dealing with this.

However, my personal opinion and using the business modelling we have done to see if it's worth rasing R1bn to build our own network... the faster the internet speeds the easier it is to provision. So I believe that if the ISPs do limit the speed then it is to their own disadvantage. There are definitely people out there who want to download >1TB per month - but can they keep that up? Also, the faster you allow them to do it the quicker they are finished 'using' the systems and typical contention ratios can come in to place.

Of course, all of this is a mute point when you find out that not only do Telkom charge the customer but also the ISP per MB of IPC... therefore, with increased bandwidth speeds the ISPs have to provision more IPC, which increases their spend significantly... Telkom can't have it both ways without coming to the party. They will just end up screwing the whole system... although again, this market is so shrouded in mystery that the ISPs will be blamed for it.

Telkom IPC costs are astronomical and so if they are to double/triple the access speeds then they should in-turn halve/third the IPC costs to allow the systems to work accordingly.

Yup - When you are told to compete in the market you are supposed to be servicing there is such a conflict of interest that it is unhealthy.

Also, don't hold your breath on LLU.
Exactly the same as when the ISPs fought to get access to IPC... the ISPs were given a choice.
1. Fight it through the courts xx years...
2. Take it at the price we're telling you.

What's to make you think that anyone will do anything to prevent it happening again?

If Telkom was either split in two -
1. to provide network access and 2. to compete
This tends to be how the rest of the world does it... either that or stop the incumbant competing all together so that they concentrate on supplying the best network service possible.
