Immigrating to the UK

Sitting on Portsmouth high street, the salvation army band playing Christmas carols (badly)... Lekker Xmas vibes.

Their lips must be freezing to the instruments!

OK which of you guys is this

Hahahaha! Reminds me of this guy I was in Matric with: could see the snow on top of the Helderberg, we’d all be standing on the field during break wearing as many clothes as the uniform would allow, still freezing our arses off, and he’d walk up wearing the summer uniform shirt.

First question was always “so how much OBS have you had?”

I remember commenting a couple of years ago that rules were only going to get tougher.

I heard them debating this on bbc4 on the radio the other evening.

I do find the logic of 'charge them more for the visa too prove they can fund themselves' a little weird and perhaps disingenuous to a point of a money making scheme from Gov.

I'm not impacted (I think ? Ancestral Visa) but it does seem there will be clamping down on visas even though there seems to be skill shortages in some industries.

It’s just the Tories trying to pander to xenophobic voters, the same one’s they managed to get to vote for them because of “get brexit done”. The only problem is too many centrist voters who would vote Tory still won’t.

Unfortunately once the law is changed it takes a lot for a successor govt to change it back.

Spot on re: the care worker visa. Apparently something like 70k have been handed out but only 11k positions have been filled. It’s a massive loophole that needs to be closed ASAP.

Majority of the almost 1mil people that came in last year were just dependents.

There’s also massive abuse of the student visas because if you’re studying to be a nurse, for example, you can bring your spouse and kids over. This guy takes the cake, eats it, and keeps asking for more:

May have left the EU, but now we’re just replacing those migrants with ones from the 3rd World.

The lady I stayed at before moving in told me how one of the carers of a family member was an asian nurse that had her passport taken by her employer...practically a slave. There's definitely some abuse going on but not sure if these measures will help

Thanks, Nigel…

don’t take it personally, I’m not being serious

I doubt anyone on here would be moving for less.

But there might be legit skilled workers from other places that might earn slightly less than that...they are screwed now if they planned on brining a spouse over. Kind of a weird change, I wonder how it will work

£38,700 is well above the average pay afaik.

Edit: I might be wrong, not sure what the immediate difference is between family and dependant visa...but I was thinking of the latter

As a family that “funded” our move on savings rather than jobs that would have made things a lot more difficult. Now that we are here and employed, “make it double” :) I joke.

Kwerre-kwerre friend of mine from Zim is trying to get over on a carer visa so he can bring his daughter over with him. Warned him already that there are a lot of dodgy people trying to scam applicants.

Agree that they need to tighten control.

It will affect me in the sense that my wife would need to find a job that pays more the £38k a year.

That’s a little concerning. I expect her to find a job at around £40k a year. But still.

Have they given any indication on when they plan to introduce these changes?

I get you, but I can’t even begin to imagine how £37k a year gross can be enough, rent alone would be 70% of that. You will have to be a dual income household to get even close to surviving.
