Immigrating to the UK

Had a family member and a friend use cazoo without a need for the 3yr thing. Don't know if that's their norm or if they're just more open to helping people but worth a look

Yoh. It's been nearly 4 years since I started this thread and if not for covid I would probably have been there already.

Actually feeling despondent and just want to pack up and leave this place.

Hopefully you’ve taken some notes. :P

Pull your finger out and make it happen. It won't happen on its own ...

Subscription cars? If so, they sadly stopped offering those a few months ago due to their financial woes...

Welp, been here 17 months tomorrow. And FINALLY i have gotten my credit rating to a point where I can move away from "credit builder" cards and get a card with a decent limit.
FFS, first card I had had a limit of less than my daily salary. New card is closer to a month gross...

Totally whacked. When I was there in early 2000's - on a working holiday visa, while it was difficult to get a bank account (took about 30 days after I arrived to get it), but when I got the bank account, HSBC, i also got a CC with the same limit as my salary. Even then people had commented that it was odd I got a CC within 1 month of arrival. I guess I was just lucky

I do think that banks were a lot easier with credit back then.
I bought a car with an unsecured loan (15 grand) after being there about 6 months in 1999.

I was lucky this time around. I got a mortgage approved within 4 months. No idea how, but thank goodness.

SO has lived in the UK before, she has had a local (UK) HSCB account for at least 4 years and some credit score. Been trying to get financing on a car, but most finance companies seems to say: "you need to have been here for 3 years to qualify for car financing".

Any advice on this?

Secondhand cars are so cheap in the UK compared to SA, why not just save up and buy one cash?

Kinda need one immediately, and moving is expensive so want to keep as much liquidity as possible.

That was me when I got there. Went with lots of hard cash. First to tide me for the first month, buy a car which was 3000 GBP. Thankfully, the place I was renting was paid before I got there wrt to deposit, etc. I transferred cash to a ZA account. Friend over there paid the GBP equivalent. We both scored. The best was the landlord telling me off for being too trusting and saying how I could give / send money without knowing him. I had replied that he was giving me so much **** about what type of tenant I would be, that I knew he would be ok. We still very good friends.

True story: On day 2 of my GBP sojourn , I was rocking what was then classed a top notch FNB gold credit card. It was stolen by a SkyTV salesperson on the high street who denied it when I realised 5 minutes later after giving it to him that it was missing. Had to get into an internet cafe stat to notify FNB. 2 days later, my replacement FNB card was delivered to my UK work address. That was service. They haven't been able to impress me as much as they did then.

Friends moving back in the next week to UK. They now done with ZA. His budget for car this time is 16K GBP. It's expensive now especially if we converting Rands

It's your own fault for closing your accounts when you left the first time. I still have all of mines, and still use the CC occasionally to keep it active :P

The secondhand car market in the UK has turned quite expensive. It's not quite as cheap to buy here anymore, compared to SA.

Who did you go with for your mortgage broker? I think you've told me before but my memory's gone to the dogs.

My accounts all went dormant, and could not be revived unfortunately. I did try. Last used them in 2005.
