Immigrating to the UK

I didn't do the rentention of citizenship paperwork because the way I understood it was that only those who got citizenship for another country later needed to retain. My birth was registered with UK and SA, so I had citizenship for both from birth.

@Sinbad I had my UK passport before getting my newest SA one, and they didn't ask for anything more than my SA paperwork. Maybe its because you are doing it through the consulate.
Yeah it's like all the stuff they're asking for is for the first issue of a passport, not a renewal.
And there's some kind of bot that answers the VFS emails when you ask for clarification...

Not an emigration question but I'll be visiting UK in September and do not want to enable MTN roaming nor do I want to connect to public wifi.

How do I get connected immediately - landing at Heathrow.
Either use an eSIM or you can walk up to a vending machine and buy a SIM card. As simple as that.

That reminds me; my passport expires in 2025. Can I renew it before the expiry?
I'll do this next year to avoid the whole saga of being in the UK with a passport that is about to expire.

When I get a Spouse visa; would I be using my BRP to get through border control when entering / leaving the UK?

I'll still have the old expired passport until 2029 at least, when my US Visa expires.

Has anyone managed to successfully apply for SA dual citizenship, after aquiring another nationality?
I have citizenship of two other countries besides SA and never had a problem - I actually had to apply for citizenship in SA as I was not born here so I think I was required to reveal citizenship of other countries on the form.

Yes, you can renew your passport before it expires.

Great stuff, I will add that to my list of things to do next year. I'll do it before I apply for the UK visa, too, and use it in the application. Keep things simple.

Thanks Killer but that thought terrifies me . I lurve to talk to a human.

I just went to the first cell shop I saw when I landed at Heathrow last month and bought a sim. If you're flying to Heathrow, it's at T5 right opposite the coffee shop at the exit. Can't miss it.

Thank you Priapus, will be at T5 and this sounds more my style - eek!

You'll pay double for renewing it early, but imho it's worth it.

You just hand the BRP and your passport to border control.

Oh didn't know that - but you're right, it's worth it to save any hassle.
Yeah you may need to give evidence of it being "lost" or "destroyed".

I need to think about this. My ppt is due in 2025, my wife's in 2024 which is why we're kicking off the renewal now, but I booked an appointment for both - the "penalty" is cheaper than another trip to london.
Let's see what happens.

What type of evidence do you give for it being lost? Destroyed is easy enough but if it is lost, do you need to report it at police station or?

Probably the police station I guess? Not sure how you prove you don’t have something if you lost it.

Affidavit if I remember right. But this was a looong time ago

/edit found this:

Passport fees:

First-time application for a passport: R400

Application for a new passport (with old passport): R400

Application for a new passport (if passport is lost): R800

So probably not an issue then.

To add to what's already mentioned.

Yes, you can renew prior to expiry. It costs extra, I can't recall how much unfortunately. You don't need a police affidavit or anything like that. I filled out the form at DOHA and got a new passport a few weeks later. Simple as that.

Depending on circumstances, consider to get a maxi passport.
