I don't think that earning threshold is unreasonable. I have no idea how anyone can expect to come here and establish themselves on less than 20k a year with no recourse to public funds for their family.

Wife says she’s just about certain she’ll find a job at it more than £40k. So we will start looking now to get an idea.

We only want to start the real job search + visa process once we have an offer on the house. It’s been on the market for less than a month. So will have to see what the new year brings.

Might have to push for this. I just realised; we were planning on using my wife’s current salary in the application (as she earns more than £20k a year here) with a new job offer in the UK paying more. So that way, we don’t need her to be employed for 6 months in the UK before I can apply.

With this increase coming; we won’t have that option anymore and would have to spend 6 months apart.

Hopefully she gets the 40K. If I were in your position I'd try and get the visa BEFORE the change. I'm pretty sure others will be thinking the same so there is now a chance of backlogs of applications just before the deadlines which could just complicate and add more uncertainty on your plans.

Yes, that's the plan. We are starting a job search for her from this evening. I have also found a job at Monzo for a mobile developer - visa sponsorship included. So will try my luck there anyway as well.

Otherwise, if the new laws are in place when we apply, it complicates everything.

Yep. I saw over the weekend that rent has increased by something like 25% over the last year. You're going to be blowing a grand on a roof over your head, not to mention energy, transportation, food... I genuinely don't understand how people survive on £30k pa.

My rent is so stupidly expensive. I recently visited a friend in Lake district and they pay £300 less than me and live in a massive place.
Mine is not tiny, but certainly not large. I love my area but rent is an absolute killer. It is also an upleasant cycle, rent is so high it leaves little for savings to buy.

When I was a landlord in SA, the levies, taxes and rates etc added up, as a tenant here these are all passed to the tenant. Its been quite an adjustment

My fiancé is a post-doc on a skilled worker visa earning under that (yes, its low - welcome to low wage Britain) and has one year left to get ILR. Her contract is up for renewal in May. It now means she will have to switch to a spousal visa through me (thankfully I earn >38k!) which will reset her time spent in the UK. In other words, another 5 years added on to get her ILR. We are absolutely furious.

This policy is just blatant dog whistling and panders to the racist Conservative backbenchers. Its going to have a significant impact on many families who are UK citizens but have foreign spouses! Never mind the economic impact.

Sorry to those who were planning their move in the spring, hopefully you can find a way!

I'm not sure it will apply to people already on SWV's - just to new applications. Not to people already in the UK. Otherwise that would mean a serious issue for people just there on a SWV and no other backup.

I think you will be fine as this will almost certainly only apply to new skilled worker visas...let's hope

Unfortunately not, as it would not be enough to cover the 62k GBP amount needed.

But it's fine, either way we will make a plan. If I have to spend 6 months apart from the wife - it's not the worst thing. We just want to avoid that if possible.
