Immigrating to the UK

Oh I know. We're looking at about £70 for each passport without the lost passport fee. But mines not lost just early so it shouldn't apply.

Add in the cost of a trip to London and it works out over £100 each. Crazy.

Not counting the £38 for a rush copy of my UK birth certificate because banana republic
Well knock me down with a feather.

Got an email today saying my passport is ready for collection...

I'm sure it's a mistake, it's only been 4.5 months

UK, most hated place on earth, yet everyone is selling their left nut to try and move / live there. Weird!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

True, it is a weird statement. If everyone is selling their left nut to move here then it’s not the most hated place on earth.

I assumed that he is sarcastically referring to the various posts on this forum where people talk about their friend Frik who has come back to SA because “he hated the weather, and didn’t want to live in a shoe box”. Apparently the UK has no redeeming qualities, and the reason so many people want to live there is one of life’s greatest mysteries.

Yeah those posts are mostly shallow in detail. Which is why it’s true, like a mathematical vacuous truth. Can’t really begrudge Frik for returning, Frik must do what he feels is right and justify it as he pleases. Migration is a different kind of tough for everyone.
As a side, no use defending our choices. It’s 2024, people migrate. None so heavily as South Africans it seems.

Yeah, Frik will do as he does, it’s the generalization and bias that people apply that annoys me - I look at the data, not cherry-picked (and often made up) anecdotes used to propagate someone’s wishful thinking.

He must be stuck in SA. So the first thing you do is complain about all the places you would like to go to but can't get to.

It's a good thing you don't like the UK. We don't want your type here.

Checked my wife's email. No updates for her. I guess hers isn't ready then. I knew it was too good to be true.

Applied same time same place. Mine is much less urgent than hers as mine expires 2025, hers June this year, and I have another PP anyway so I can travel, and we have a holiday in Europe booked for early next year. So of course mine will come first right?

Relax. I'm sure even South Africa can produce a passport within the next 354 days?

We need to get her a visa so we need it by June

When we applied there was a woman who'd been waiting 14 months...

Btw -does anyone know how long it takes to get a letter from home affairs saying one can keep their SA citizenship and not lose it?
in and out/ weeks/ months?

Can’t say, as we didn’t even bother when we submitted our UK citizenship applications. Stripping anyone of their SA citizenship for obtaining a foreign citizenship has been proven to be unconstitutional, anyway.

applied in UK? much quicker from SA (3 week holiday and a booking via a bank needed)
3 week holiday is a tad expensive and impractical. I'd rather use my limited leave for proper holidays. There's also the risk of a **** up at home affairs and then there's no way to get your passport if it's delayed slightly. In person collections only.

Can barely remember, but I think it was around two months.

Amusingly, around six months after that another one randomly appeared in the mail, so I have two certificates that say the same thing.

I applied for it well in advance of acquiring my British citizenship though.

Had all my ducks in a row and all that.
