Immigrating to the UK

They're all equally mediocre unless you get a small independent operator. Hyperoptic ftw

I need to get some fibre goodness, best options are Vodafone and Sky. I'm guessing it doesn't matter which ISP?

Vodafone usually have the best deals, often with some cash back. Check via uSwitch and MSE if there are any current deals.

Hamish McPanji got a good Vodafone deal recently.

Yup. Some January offer from Vodafone. 900mbps fibre for £28/month , with like almost 3 months worth of cash back. Includes the phone line (keep your number) , which made my mother in law happy.

Downsides :
24 months contract
7% Price increase kicks in April 2024

Upside :
Don't have to worry for 2 years
900mbps is awesome. We had 150 with sky

500 is plenty good enough. You will struggle to get that 900 unless it's wired anyway. Virgin was £27 for 250mbps...so only £1 difference

Highest wireless I've got is 589 down , 750 up on my phone /pc

Use broadband genie(there are others) to check what is available for the address then compare packages and read reviews.

Only time I had an issue with them was the 3 days they went down because a construction crew drilled into the pavement and ripped out all the cabling in the street.

They were flaky as hell for me. Slow in the evening and at least once a week dropping out altogether.

They also have the worst customer service in the industry.

This.

I'd recommend Zen or iDNET if you're on OpenReach's infrastructure.

Otherwise, YouFibre, Gigaclear, Hyperoptic, Netomnia if you can get them.

Used to be with Hyperoptic, but alas, they don't service where we now live.

I absolutely detest Virgin. They did a botched installation, customer service is a nightmare, and cancellation was a pain.

Zen has been utterly wonderful. No issues, and customer service has been easy to reach and generally stellar.

And I treat BT/Plusnet with much the same disdain as Telkom.

Thanks all, sounds like the vodafone 500M/s for £31 is the one for me to get

Credit score finally went up by 16 points to "Ok" from "Needs work"

Wonder if I will be approved for a credit card now, really just need something with even a £100 limit in order to help my score along...

I think I read a comment from Sinbad about Loqbox and I signed up for that when I got here, it definitely seemed to have helped a bit

Credit card helps big time if you stick to using under 25%. Everytime I forget to use it my score drops. Then I use it and it goes up again.
Try Tesco for a credit builder card.

I’ve noted on here before that going with monthly insurance dropped my score, but it subsequently improved because it is seen as a loan.

Vanquis, Aqua or Ocean were always on the easier side for lower credit scores after arriving.

I get shot down immediately for any credit cards from the banks. The most obvious blocker seems to be the lack of address history for at least a whole year.

Speaking of getting credit, I've been researching and talking to people and it seems like if you don't have indefinite leave to remain (or citizenship) the banks are going to ask you for a 25% deposit for mortgages. Not sure how true it is though.

Personally hoping that when I get there I can avoid cc's completely but suppose necessary evil for online purchases and such.

They want to know where you have lived for 3 years.
After banking with Lloyds for about 5 months they gave me an overdraft. Used it to buy my airline ticket for Dec, so currently paying that back.
Also bought some stuff on 0% credit from Currys. They also ask for 3 years of addresses but I just lied (a friend's wife also did this, which is where I got the idea from) and they didn't have an issue. Paying off my Galaxy Tab S9+ on the 25th. So yes I am a little naughty, but if you pay it off then it should be ok in the end.

I was thinking of buying a laptop somewhere on credit instead of cash, but afraid that if I even apply it might affect my score.

Soft searches against your name do not impact your credit score.
If its somewhere that offers interest free then you won't get hit with a hard search.
I also use Klarna for a number of purchases because it allows me to spread the cost over 3 months without interest.

Not true about the hard search thing - some places that are interest free will hard search you.

Yeah Klarna is handy.
