Immigrating to the UK

For insurance I was advised to contact this guy ( steve *at* specialist4.co.uk). Seems to be the company that most people on the FB group I'm on suggested contacting.

This . When buying any car get insurance quotes first. I bought a sh!Tbox for £650 ( it seemed like a good idea at the time) and the insurance was over £400. The cheapest I could find at the time.

If you think about it, the value of your car can’t be the main factor in insurance price. I can go buy a £200 car and then promptly total a Bugatti Veyron as I drive out of a side street and t-bone him.

Same reason 3rd party insurance can be more expensive than fully comp, the algorithms think you’re the type who can’t be bothered to care for your car.

The insurance companies here don't seem to care about your business or keeping it. I remember being able to get Outsurance to price match and even lower their premiums just by saying I was considering leaving.

I will negotiate my renewal every year, though it’s often still cheaper to move after using the Meerkats.

I've been here 8months and still surviving without a car...I can walk most places (gym, shops etc. ±15mins) or take the train to the city/town if I wanted to. But I need to get a car at some point so thought I'd ask what you all did when you got here? Buy el'cheapo cash?
Before you buy:

Obtain insurance quotes
ULEZ & Congestion charge depending on where you live
Annual Road tax
Check car history (depending on where you buy the car). I would probably run a carvertical (or similar report) if I bought from an independent dealer or private to ensure the car is not under finance, stolen, in an accident, or Kms rolled back.

In terms of where to buy;

I have read horror stories about independent dealers in areas such as Birmingham & Bradford. This is obviously a stereotype - buyer beware.
You can buy a car directly from a dealer, with limited credit history (that’s what I did). I opted for a model a few years old, with a year warranty in place. You will need to provide additional docs like work contract, and your interest rate wont be great.

If you want to buy cash, be sure to join your local area facebook groups. I see 1 owner small hatchbacks sell on my local group all the time for anything between £1000 - £3000. The “voetstoots” clause would apply, but I think there are bargains to be had if you do your checks.

A car certainly isn’t needed, but It makes it easier if you need to go pick stuff up, and we have had some pretty epic road trips when friends visit.

How long did it take to get unabridged birth/marriage certificates from Home Affairs. I went yesterday, and they said since they need to get mines from Pretoria, it will take 6-8 weeks!

Unabridged marriage certificates will take a long time if you haven't requested them before. Took about a year. Yes a whole year.

Fortunately I don’t need those for spouse visa. A normal marriage certificate will suffice. As marriage isn’t a mandatory requirement. They just want to make sure we are a genuine couple and been together for more than two years (Easy to prove as we both on title dead of the house we sold and other documents)

But yeah, a year wait is madness.

A car for us would 100% be needed. No way am I doing the weekly shopping by bus. Or going to the in-laws by bus with the family.
Well get your weekly shopping delivered, or at the very least do collection.
The only time I go to the shops these days is to buy milk.
For my grocery shopping I do collection with Sainsbury's (which costs 50p)... drive up to the box, push the button, give them my name and then the dude comes out and I load them into the boot.

Right, time to try and sell my Johannesburg property. It's making me nervous as I had it on show for a few months about a year and a half ago with very little luck. Stuck a tenant into it but they've now given notice so it's time to try again. It's stressing me out, for sure.

My place sold within 3 months. Had it on the market in November by the end of Jan I had an OTP. JHB North. Transfer for new owner went through last week.

I’m still not taking the family to visit in-laws by bus.

This place is in Bryanston. Just need to make sure I get a property agent with the right sort of clientele. It's not a particularly expensive property but I think with the previous marketing attempt, the fact that the place was empty and we were still sort of fresh out of Covid, didn't help.

Jirre. I got mine last year through an agency, took 2 weeks from payment until it was in my hands, cost a small fortune though. Apparently unabridged ones aren't done anymore.

My old home was also in Bryanston and sold pretty quick. Generally a great area, and should take long, maybe your agent is useless. Ive sent you a PM for a great agent in the area, maybe he can help

Find it hilarious that people are losing their minds because they need photo ID to vote today.

It’s strange that it’s such a foreign concept here when we’ve grown up needing our ID books for just about everything in SA.

I didn't need photo ID to vote…

Or they could just do... a postal vote!

We sent ours in almost two weeks ago.

I miss having an ID card. It simplifies many things and is a decent layer of security compared to anyone knowing your name, address, and date of birth getting away with murder.

Indeed, it’s one of the ways that Bulgarian gang was able to swindle DWP out of £54mil.

Labour wanted one, the Tories killed it.
