Immigrating to the UK

We’re in F band. £310 monthly.

On the water, we are with Anglian, they charge a monthly set rate and then do a “true up” of sorts every 6 months but we are always ahead.

We're renting. I won't be able to register for a doctor until my visa is through and I have an NI number. But good shout; I'll add it to the list of things to do once we're there.

We've also been looking at day cares in the area. Seen some decent ones at good pricing. And with the governments help on subsidies it's very close to what we pay here anyway. But like most things, they want us there before we can get him in - so hoping there isn't a long wait list or something like that.
Depends on your visa but the subsidies are terrible? Its only 15 hours which is spread throughout the year which means only 1 day a week is covered. The rest of the week plus food - extras is 320 pounds. (normally).

You can email most of them and set up meetings and check their availability now or for Aug.

Also, did the landlord give you the meter readings? Did he do the inventory check with you online?

Eish, I thought mine at 260 was bad

Yeah I worked it out to roughly £300 a month.

We're entitled to 15hrs a week over the normal "term" period. As long as we both have NI numbers, earn less than £100k a year (Each, not combined) and earn more than minimum wage.

My son would only be at day care roughly, 5 hours a day - so they'd be covered for 3 days a week. Which helps massively.

Yes, we have current meter reading and they did an online check - we have photos of all current (known) damage, marks, etc)

Just check with the day care. All of the ones I have dealt with covert the 15 hours week per term to 11 hours per week per year. So you would be covered only for 2 half days a week.

Good to know, thanks.

How long does it take to get couches?

Our mate in the UK says it's normally 6 weeks to order a new couch. That can't be right?

Most furniture shops are built to order.
Flat pack stuff can be really hit and miss quality wise where Ikea has them covered and typically have stock on hand.

Ah okay. So we'll need to order a few weeks before we get there then. The wife doesn't want to go weeks without a couch, so that's understandable and we don't really fancy trying to find a second hand one.

I would recommend going into stores and seeing it for yourself before buying.

Agreed.
Also you need to see your rooms as well and get a feel for the sizing etc.

Not everywhere is slow, there are options for decent quality and quick delivery (ikea, dunelm, homebase etc)

Second hand market here is really good in terms of pricing(agree, not for a couch) but the biggest problem is transporting stuff.
We started with nothing but blow up mattresses as a couch(and bed). Couches last for many years so I wanted to sit on them before ordering anything.

Thanks all. Just need to convinced the wife of this now lol.

She doesn’t want to rock up to a completely empty house on day one. Which I understand. But we might have to.

We slept on mattresses and I used a plastic camp table as a desk / dining room table when we moved into our new place. Make an adventure of it :D

Ive bought loads of quality furniture off facebook marketplace, even before I had a car.

A simple solution is to get a quote with man with a van for delivery.

I concur with the suggestions to go look at furniture prior to buying. Something that worked quite well for me was, I visited the local Ikea and took pics of everything I wanted to buy. Then when you get home, simply order online and it arrives a few days later.
