importing an iPhone 4 from the US - will it work in SA?

They're locked unfortunately. There are Jailbreaks and SIM unlocks, but everytime there is a new OS update, you have to wait for a new release of the jailbreak.

Rather try and get one that is already unlocked. Canada sells unlocked ones, and possibly not yet, but a few places in Europe will be selling them unlocked.

It is a HUGE headache having top wait for anonymous groups of hackers to release software wkith which to hack your device so it will work. Each update will be a high risk annoyance.

Unless you are going to save a fortune doing so - don't bother.

US iPhones are locked to the AT&T network. Unless you are interested in hacking the sh*t out of it all the time to get it to work, and worrying about whether or not the latest Apple iOS update will break it, stay away from the US ones.

If you really must import one, get a UK one, they are not locked. I see that article also points at the Canadian and French ones, can't comment on those, but I know for a fact the UK ones will work here.

Get one from a country that sells them unlocked, not the US. You can get it in the UK for £500 or in Europe for €630. There are some new countries on the list too.

I had my first hands on with the iPhone 4 last night but as the thing is still network locked to ATT I wasnt able to test out the death grip. Any ideas when they're going to be releasing a unlock?

So other than trying to break it what were your impressions?? :p

It seemed like a great bit of kit and that screen is incredible. I don't think I could sell myself on another touch screen phone though.

Except for the fact that it's hard to use in the car, (which you shouldn't actually do, ever) I find the touchscreen & software keyboard pretty great.

Agreed!! I hated touchscreen devices too but since the 3GS and more recently the Desire I cannot consider anything else...

Different strokes and all that. :)

Yes, I do prefer it for day to day use. I find the virtual keyboard ties up too much screen real estate.
