Incredibly expensive Connection

In their defence:

1. The shops are normally in shopping centres (e.g. Sandton City) where the rentals make Incredible's prices look like a charity :)
2. They generally hold stock, i.e. not 'allow five working days for delivery'.
3. They are open seven days a week.

Their target market is the walk-by customer who (for example) wants a laptop.

Their target market is not the tech-savvy purchaser who is looking for the lowest price on a specific item.

That said, the pricing on their specials is normally pretty good, as is certain items.

Finally, I recently purchased an HP printer (on special) from them. As the result of a number of factors - mainly HP's - I couldn't complete the deal by the time the special was over. When I complained they found stock, transferred it to the shop most convenient to me - and kept the price.

I was very impressed !

+1 to this.

I would hate to know what they pay rent. R150k in a place like Canal Walk? Their shops are always well stocked and it costs money to hold stock.

Also many items are very competitively priced: Laptops, External hard drives, Cameras, Screens etc

Would never buy a desktop or desktop components from them though!

I got a logitech Wireless Keyboard/Mouse combo for R349 at Incredible Connection and CNA also has some nice specials on stuff, got a R300 Logitech PC Stereo headset for R150 :D.

Very good performance for the price I paid.

Not to burst your bubble but if it is the Logitech h150 headset, I got it for R74 at IC.

I can't complain about the Vodacom section, I took out two contracts with a R5000 voucher. Although their prices is somewhat higher I manage to buy an Ipad 3 for R5000 when they had a price error one day. They honored the price no problems. The other voucher I bought a nice i5 laptop, not much else I wanted in store.

Granted they are more expensive than other options usually but if you need something on a Sunday or pretty might "right now" during the week it's usually worth the premium.

Just don't take any advice and don't buy any antivirus software :D

+1 With Brawler.

But, the majority of their sales staff have very little product knowledge. I looked at a desktop once that seemed to be really good value for money, and the salesman has no clue what a graphics card was, or even how to find out. I checked myself and walked away.

Some of the BS I have heard them spinning customers is out of this world. Back in the day when I was starting my computer business, I used to troll IC on the weekends, handing out cards to prospective clients as they walked out empty-handed. Not very ethical, I know, but I did what I had to do to get customers.

One of the most important things about being a computer dealer is providing your clients with information that will ensure they make the right long-term choices, which I don't see at IC.

I had a client that insisted he was not interested in gaming, or any type of media manipulation, so I gave him a motherboard without an AGP port because that was all he could afford. I explained the ramifications. Three months later he was crying at my doorstep.

The reason why their prices are so high is that they treat head office and the stores and separate businesses. So there is markup before the stock hits the store, one of my first jobs was a casual salesperson at IC.

I don't think they deserve wrath, I think consumers should just be more aware of the price they are paying. If you are going to drop R1000 on something do some research.
Also there are not a lot of computer stores that hold the kind of stock the IC does and also gives you support.

Besides the mom and pop stores... where else do you get your stuff ? Game/Dions/Makro... you are not going to get any kind of advice/support there. So if you go for price then you take a chance.

I get most of my stuff online but often I find my self in a store looking at what is available and talking to sales guys that sometimes know more about the stuff then I do... then if the price is more or less the same I just go for it.

Bottom line is shop around.

I wish i can have IC's clients :-P
Software Prices are crazy. Go check the Dealer Prices of Microsoft Office Editions and compare it to IC ones.
Networking stuff like Routers/Access Points are overpriced.

Ok I know the dealer (=suppliers) prices well

Couldn't get my wife's laptop cheaper anywhere else. Also her aio printer a good price

Its not its the PC Stereo 860 one

The H150 one sucked compared to this one

Its unfortunate because of keeping so much stock the prices are a lot more than online..

I have bought from them before when I got a nettop on special for R2k a few years ago. Othwewise I mostly just browse games section to go download later

After working with Recton, Pinnacle, Esquire, etc you do see the markup eish, but they have decent after sales support (because of big markup)

Put it this way, if your on MyBB, your not their target market...

sometimes its because the stock is old. The dealer price changes month to month but it might have been on the shelf for a year.

This is where the online shops win, they don't hold stock.

this^

and the convenience of the range they carry, makes them pretty much a one stop shop

I can't believe the BS I've heard their salespeople spin and the average joe soap just swallows it up

last year I watched one of their sales guys trying to sell the most expensive AV product they had as companion software for a new laptop that a woman was buying, I just chipped in that she could download MSE for free, the sales guy just looked at me dumbfounded :D

Where were you when I was duped into purchasing a Voodoo Banshee many years ago.. :o

True, first in first out must have a role to play in their grand pricing scheme.
And also it is a fact, that large shopping centres charge exorbitant rentals, which should influence the pricing as well.

On a side note, I went to IC for a quote (insurance replacement), for an office PC, they wanted to sell me a PC costing 10K.

I used to work for one of the distributors supplying IC. And yes, their mark-up is insane, but it is part of their business model, Walmart entering the market is forcing them to re-look at this though but I think it'll be a while until the consumers sees the change.

I forgot about that. Walmart could totally kill IC.

The thing is... as much as we might hate Uncredible Corruption, Walmart taking them out is not a good thing at all.
