(CNN) -- A space rocket carrying communications equipment exploded soon after takeoff Saturday evening in India, the official national news agency reported.

The unmanned rocket strayed from its flight path and broke into pieces, according to the Press Trust of India.

Video of the incident showed huge plumes of white and copper-colored smoke streaming across the sky.

CNN's sister network, CNN-IBN, reported that the rocket lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Center in Sriharikota. Its launch was originally scheduled for December 20, but had been postponed because of an engine leak, CNN-IBN said.

It was not immediately clear what caused the failure, which the Press Trust called a setback to India's space program.

Oh dear! :(

Since we were part of BRIC now, I thought we'd show a bit more sympathy... but the humour has been witty :D

Got to give credit to them for their perseverance ;)

This was the largest satellite that they have attempted to launch...

Although India has had success with the launch of lighter satellites, it has faced problems sending up heavier payloads, hampering the growth plans of its commercial launch business.

In April, a rocket powered by a domestically built cryogenic engine used for lifting heavy payloads developed a snag and plunged into the Bay of Bengal off India's east coast.

It'll take China and India years to go to post Cold War NASA levels...

Agreed, however, NASA had billions to plough into getting it right. Having become so successful I find it odd that they have somewhat taken their foot off the gas.

The Russians were always ahead of NASA.

In the 60s/70 the Russian developed a rocket engine design that everybody said was impossible but they never knew about the russians. The engines were never used but they built many of them that were supposed to be destroyed but orders were ignored and they were mothballed. 40-50 years later the yanks are falling over their own feet to buy this old stock.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NK-33

Without the Russians the ISS would not have happened or would have taken a lot longer costing more money for development. The Russians did not have the money but the Yanks needed their tech & experience from Mir. ISS is built around Mir-2. Russian space suits were also of simpler & better design than the yanks, the list goes on.

Saw a interesting documentary on the Russian aerospace industry on how it operates. The guy that pens the design is involved till the end of the manufacturing process so he has a very broad scope of responsibility and fixing a flawed design is much easier due to his involvement. NASA on the other had is very compartmentalised and everything gets handed from one guy to the next. The Russian methodology just makes a lot more sense.

they don't call dem BRICKS for nothin..
y
only joking,

sad to hear though, they have a long path to endure.

another thing is why dos india even need(although i am not doubting their capablity), a space program when we could have just asked the americans, chinese, japanese or european agencies or corperations to offer these services. I don;t think that it is that efficient for us to always endup re-inventing the darn exact same thing. Why not get the to invest their time in creating something nw, like a good electric car that could get 1.5 billion people to stop emitting co2. You are wasting scientists.

Nationalism. Kinda like my dick is bigger than yours ;)

This reminded me of this quote:

"Net so min soos wat jy die ooste wind met 'n sif kan keer
of branders in die see met 'n besem terug sal vee!
so min kan jy nasionalisme keer!"

Our Space Agency will fix this - with the Gupta Family right here in SA, all they want to do is aid the boys and girls back home in India to get the next one right. BS
