Just got a call from a very abrupt sounding afrikaans gentleman asking if I was aware that an "indirect portfolio" or "indirect trading portfolio" had been opened in my name. When I said no, he just hung up.

*edit - actually he hung up after I asked exactly who he was and who he's working for*

It's a scam or some sort, probably identity theft, but how does it work? What should I be checking if anything?

I would say start with your credit records (who looked into your personal information lately)

Get this call every few months.

As far as I can tell it's in the same league as "you've been specially pre-approved for a cellphone contract". It's annoying but harmless. Every time they call me, I ask them to call me back in 5 minutes. I then proceed to block the number before they can.

Wouldn't worry too much if I were you.

The scariest thing I encountered lately, someone called to verify debit orders, and how I spend money on my credit card (super WEIRD) !

That is rather worrying, don’t the banks sometimes ask you to confirm your last debit order amount or what your last credit card transaction was as part of their processes to confirm your identity, usually when you phoning them for whatever reason. I don’t think I would just volunteer that information if someone phoned me for it.

All your information is public anyway. Not sure how in 2020 people still find it surprising?
Yip and I find it disturbing lots of places use the info they procure from the Credit bureaus to do authetication that it's you on the phone or doing an online application, info which as far as I know any person/scammer with R100 can buy themseleves online from Experian etc and use that info to pretend it's you.

Well, these guys are still at it. I just had a call from them about an Indirect Portfolio open on the JSE. When I repeated the company name back to them a few times the call was cut.

I won weekly stuff or an "new account opened" on a JSE listing ! Wish idiots would stop wasting people's time !

Now known as Liberte Solutions. Got a call from them the other day. Tsek.

Just got the call now .

Asked what it was about, they have some story about me having taken out an insurance policy and how that made a trading account be opened in my name and these other people are benefiting from it with 40% return while only giving me a 7% return. Wanted to arrange a meeting with me. I declined that.

Got a couple of calls on this over the last two weeks, from these guys. Just hung up and blocked their numbers.

Got a call from what must be a scammer wanting to see me regarding my 'indirect portfolio'. Call came from +27(0)128816768.

Got one of these this morning as well:

Caller: I'd like to talk to you about your involvement with the JSE.
Me: I'm not invested in the JSE.
Caller: Yes you are, your pension or provident fund is invested there.
Me: I have neither and invest only offshore.
Caller: *click*

Kept getting these calls 2 to 3 times a week. One day I had enough and strung this guy along for about 45 minutes asking him to explain everything to me. I was even transferred once or twice. Even booked a demo with them for 7:00 the next morning. I sent it them an address in Hillbrow.

Eventually i told him im just wasting his time like he is wasting mine. He threatened to come to my house and “waste my life”. He had my ID number and a the address of the place i rented 13 years ago.

This was two years ago. They never called back.

The scam is they sell you trading manuals and some software. Everything is free up front but the software will pay then a commission every time you trade on the platform.
