Insane Download speed

Friend of mine managed to get 10mbps download from Telkom on his 4mb line. He says it's the exchange which was syncing at 12mbps - he lives literally next door the the exchange in Centurion, Pretoria.

Does that mean we'll see 12mb ADSL soon?

yeah wel i have a 4mb line and last month my line was syncing at 12mb during their trials. phoned telkom and asked and apparently 12mb is very close due to the successful trials.

Wow, guys you have some speed. I have a 1 MB download speed and i thought that is fast. If i may ask, how much do you pay per month?

wel if you are talking about private adsl then I only pay R550 a month for telkom do package 3 (4096 line + 5gb bandwidth)

but in terms of university campus speed, wel i guess you just have to go there to get those speeds :)

With all this bandwith specials flying arround, I am worried more about what ET (phone home) apps I have running... I don't like apps to just "use my cap" even if it is dirt cheap... because it means my PC is performing stuff I didn't ask it, and not paying all it's attention to what I DID ask it to do... I know that modern PC's are fast and ADSL is also fast enought to handle background jobs, but really, I don't see people hauling arround a trailer behind their 4x4's on the highway, just because they can! So why should my PC & ADSL line drag arround tasks I don't need? (Yes, I don't need the most up to date FireFox every week... really the installed version is working fine...)

(For everyone following my post... +1 on the Post Counter!)

Telkom were trailing speeds on their ADSL2+ enabled exchanges, hence a few lucky users were bumped up to data rates such as 8 Mbps, 10 Mbps and 12 Mbps. There has been talk of them upgrading 4 Mbps lines to 8 Mbps free of charge (such as what they did when they went from 1Mbps to 4 Mbps).

i did a speedtest at uwc, got over 60Mbps but actual download speed was 2.2 MBsp. posted it here under adsl discussion

Unlimited :)

hi I test the speed of my internet in many sites I got the best speed results from here scanmyspeed
my results are
download=1.09Mbps
upload=0.87Mbps
I dont know the reason why my speed seems to be slow many of them said that if Cable Internet services share bandwidth with satellite Internet access.
If there are many subscribers using that same bandwidth, it can slow down the connection.
kindly guide me how to solve this problem .
