Installation time

Information Black Hole

Telkom Closer Option 5 Order. Ref 184667/44.

I have been told 4 times that my ADSL has been activated, and been told by 3 call centre consultants that the activation is incomplete.

It is impossible to speak to anyone directly involved with the activation to establish what the problem is, what has to be done to solve the problem or how long it will take.

The Telkom responses to my complaints on hellopeter are:

"Hello Mze
We apologise for the delay in the activation of the required service. We acknowledge your previous post and will again refer this matter to the relevant technical department to resolve. We trust that they will seek to resolve as soon as possible."

Surprisingly, this has happened, and I have been informed once by a consultant on 0800456786 that line had been jumpered and the ADSL should be activated, and I have been phoned 3 times and told that the line is activated. I have also been told on three different occasions by consultants on 0800375375 that the activation is incomplete.

The consultants on 0800456786, 080375375 don't appear to have direct contact with the department doing activation and cannot give information that means anything to me.

The ladies who have confirmed activation have yet to give me meaningful answers.

If there had been any competing service provider, I would have cancelled my order with Telkom and gone willingly to the opposition.

How long does it take to activate from date of order for self installation? Who knows?

Remember - this is Telkom.

There are both very competent and pleasant people and highly incompetent and ill-mannered people there.

It depends on the luck of the draw as to who you end up talking to and who works with your order.

5 Working Days (SIO) CPT - Northern Subs

Ordered my ADSL (existing telkom line-prepaid) on Feb 01 (evening - Telkom walkin shop). Got a ref no on Feb 02 - prepaid line also converted on same day. Got a call Feb 05 to confirm details (SIO). Got a call today 09 Feb, line is installed and ready to go. Must install modem in 7 days.

Total - 5 working days after I got ref no!!:D

Big Black Hole

Hi eremos,

This is the response I got from the URL after filling in relevant information.

"Your ADSL Service request has already been processed."

This info is as useful as a dose of piles!

Have you plugged a modem into the line?

The reason I ask is when you do a self-install you have 7 days after installation to "activate" the line, which means using the link to see if ADSL is activated and plugging in a modem to sync with the DSLAM.

Maybe that's all that needs to be done and the call center is just too clueless to tell you.

Modem plugged in

Thanks for the response.

My Netgear DG834G v3 is plugged in but shows no ADSL connection. Have checked with different RJ11 cables which are proven to have worked. No filter on this particular wall jack.

This ties in with the guy at 0800375375 who says the activation is incomplete.

BTW it is a pleasant surprise to get the Telkom response to posts on hellopeter. This is probably the only way we can communicate with Telkom and get responses.

ADSL now working (Closer option 5)

It has actually been "activated" since Monday, but the techie did not know his A from his B, and got the connections ass about face. Today, a techie went to check the connections at the exchange, corrected the "human" error and voila! I had ADSL.

My next problem is my 4mbps is only 640kbps.

Any ideas about getting the speed up?
