Hey everyone,
Made the choice to install Fibre in our apartment, Phoned WebAfrica this morning and confirmed that they do cover the installation and that the router is free, and they'll only bill me once everything is working and sorted. They told me that the lead time is about 4-10 weeks (a bit steep but I'll suffice in the meantime). Just curious as to anyone else's experience with WA Fibre (Telkom Backbone) we do have it pulled into our "estate", I live at the little complex at the back of Kleinbron Mews in Vredekloof Heights/Brackenfell. I'll keep you guys updated and post info and pictures along the way to help out anyone else that may need info!
Note: Telkom can only do 2 installations a day, they have 4 teams (assuming of 2 people each) with Fibre cable, routers, ONT and a splicing machine, this is in CPT. Fibre splicers can go for about R100-R200k each! So this is why it takes so long, imagine a bulk order of 300 installations from WA for only 8 people. They have to stick to lunch and working hours too, and also some installations and routes may be more difficult in some places. So it's not WA or OpenServe/Telkom's fault at the end of the day, equipment (splicers, fibre cable, routers and ONT's) are flipping expensive. Credit for this info thanks to Bighit. http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...-WebAfrica?p=18145719&viewfull=1#post18145719

Actual Time Taken: 6 Weeks from Order Placed on Website

Timeline:
07 Aug 2016: Placed order on WA Website
08 Aug 2016: Submitted Debit Order Authorization form
08 Aug 2016 12:02 Just received a call from a Operations Admin at WebAfrica asking for my GPS co-ordinates and giving the run-down on times and such, he gave me his direct line to contact him on. He informed me that it will take 4-10 weeks (10 being really extreme). Once they get my GPS co-ordinates they log it with Telkom and then get an order number, and then after that they get an installation/install number, that can take up to 15-20 days. Telkom will call you on behalf of their networking department, when they arrive on site they'll do an inspection and if possible the fibreoptic run on the same day, if Telkom requires additional work they'll discuss it with you. WA receives a daily report every 48Hours from Telkom but he did tell me to call WA once the fibre is in and they will start activating it from their end. So far, so good, very impressed with response times etc!
08 Aug 2016 12:07 - 12:48: Received confirmation that my order is being processed, order is processed and received my OMS number, now waiting on an installation number (CBS number) which should be acquired in 48Hours or less.
10 Aug 2016 14:00 - Used the WebAfrica chat option on their website to check what was going on with my order number. They told me it takes 1-2 weeks for Telkom to get a CBS number, Phoned telkom and gave them my I.D #, confirmed details etc and they said something about an "unverified address" case being opened. They also asked me if someone from /Telkom/ had phoned me and I never received such a call.
11 Aug 2016 11:00 - Phoned Telkom again and provided my I.D Number, they added the correct address and re-verified my address, which apparently was not on the system yet (???) I emailed the Operations Administrator that let me know about the Telkom CBS number etc asking for an update, if no updates by the end of the month I'll look at other options.
17 Aug 2016 10:45: Just got a call from Kevin at WebAfrica apologizing for the lack of an update and asking me if its a good time to talk, asked if he could pop an e-mail through with my CBS number, received the CBS number and was told either himself, or Jody would be in contact later today.
18 Aug 2016 10:00 Phoned Telkom to check for an update, gave them my I.D Number and they told me "no order has been placed, only in April for a Landline". WebAfrica Fibre sales didn't answer, so I contacted ISPAfrika and spoke to Garth, he told me to rather stick with my current order, as when you get the CBS number that means it's going to go through to scheduling, and then installation etc. Hopefully that little black cable can come in soon
18 Aug 2016 22:33 Opened a Ticket earlier today with WebAfrica and got an E-Mail at about 22:00~ confirming now that my order is in the scheduling phase with Telkom/Openserve. No one picked up the phone earlier for an update. Everything going quickly, and smoothly so far.
05 Sep 2016 11:55 No further communication from OpenServe/Telkom/WebAfrica since CBS number was received. Will update as more info comes along. If no info received by 01 Oct then I'll update again.
16 Sep 2016 14:10 Just got a call from Telkom, they want to come out on the 19th to install, these C*nts at work won't approve my leave! F**K. (Been waiting near a month and there's close to p**s all work to do lately and we have this 2 weeks notice before leave bs) *****ing fuming right now because I got excited now to only have my hopes shot down, thought, finally no-more 3G but alas something gets in my way.
19th Sep 2016 08:50 Telkom just confirmed the time they're coming to install, yay! Took a "sick" day off of work, had to go to the doctor anyway to see to some long existing problems, WebAfrica told me I might sit in the same situation if I reschedule, I tried to arrange for someone to open up but no one was available. Guess its better for me to be here. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
19th Sep 2016 12:40 Everything is working great, two guys came through but only the one guy did the splicing. They removed the cover, pulled the cable through using the old copper connection as a draw wire, spliced at the hub twice (they drove off somewhere), spliced into the ATB and ONT connected, they ran into a slight snag with the "POTS" light flashing which it wasn't supposed to. They drove off and got that sorted, they phoned the Fibre call center, he gave them my circuit number and then the ONT (Alcatel-Lucent) started flashing for Update, he confirmed this with them over the phone, connected a test router of his own (PACE Telkom-branded router). Got 19.26mbit/s down and ~10mbit/s up with 0ms jitter and 4ms latency to Cape Town using OpenServe speedtest. Now just to wait for WebAfrica to send their techie through with my router and do the install tomorrow.
20th Sep 2016 12:15 Just spoke to billing at WebAfrica, everything's fine from their end, not too much to pay for having the service live this month (~R400). Just waiting on the delivery people/independent company to drop my router off at work by 11:30AM tomorrow, so Internet should hopefully be live by tomorrow evening.
21st Sep 2016 13:32 Just got a chance to have lunch, router was delivered before 11:30AM, also pre-configured and open for me to change what I like, now only to get home and see my Fibre in action!
21st Sep 2016 19:52 We're live! Just jammed a game of CSGO, latency spiked a bit but got 20-30 to JHB server, speeds are awesome! Upload almost 10mbit/s!!!! I love it and hope it stays this way. Could have been the server, CSGO servers can sometimes be a bit wonky.

Info From Telkom's Website on Fibre Installation:
Stage 1 – External Work: Bringing the fibre cable to your property
In the first phase Telkom lays Optical cables in the Main Services sleeves to manholes on one side of the pavement (could be under/upper ground as each suburb is different).
If the customer’s premise’s is in need of any entry pipes, Telkom will provide a quote for trenching at R 2,087.25 (includes first 10 linear meters. Additional trenching will be at a cost of R208.73). A Telkom approved contractor is available to complete the work; alternatively the customer may make use of his own contractor to do the work.
Telkom will then connect the Fibre to a small box (ONT) which needs to be fixed to a wall inside your property, as per requirement from customer. It could be your internal server room, study, entertainment room as each home is different.
Stage 2 – Internal Work: Your engineering appointment to complete the fibre installation inside your home
The technician will bring the Fibre into your home and fit your Fibre Modem in a location agreed with you.
Appointments are scheduled upfront with the customer and you will have to be at home as the technician needs access to the inside of your home to fit your Fibre equipment.
Each installation is different but could last from 4 – 16 hours from the point at which the technician arrives.
