Intel abandons Larrabee project

Good idea! it would have been a fail anyway

Dude - legends like Michael Abrash was working on this project. It would have been one of the most awesome developments EVER. It is disappointing, but I still believe that return to software is in the pipeline. Our current GPU's will be delegated to same heap as the old hardware "character generators" of old.

One swallow does not make a summer.

I had high hopes for this but at the same time my doubts. Maybe they should just go and buy nVidia and pump some R&D cash into it.

You forgot to add your <sarcasm></sarcasm> tags in your post.

As I have said in the other thread, intel fails at many things unless they imitate the success of competitors - like AMD.

The reason they delayed their GPU is plain - AMD has delayed Fusion, so without AMD doing fusion there is no way intel can make iFusion or Larrabug or what ever they call it.

No, Rouxenator.

The reason they delayed Larrabee is due to this being a totally new approach to hardware/software for them, and they're having unexpected issues with the hardware and therefore the software stack will NOT be mature enough by the time they planned to launch so they've decided to rather release it as a development platform rather than a production item.

To make things simple for the AMD fan boy above;

AMD's Fusion = GPU integrated into the same package as the CPU

Intel's Larrabee = DISCREET GRAPHICS!

Intel's Clarkdale will have the GPU integrated into the same package as the CPU, doesn't need anything from fusion, and will be released long before fusion

OK - thanks - now I'm with you.

So basically, they are not trying to make iFusion they are trying to make iATI or iRadeon first ?

No,

They're trying to make a discrete graphics chip. They're not copying ATI or AMD or Nvidia or anyone.

What is it with intel and GPU's? I cant think a company that makes the most brilliant CPU's (currently) cannot for the life of them make a good GPU.

Mebbe its time intel get some new engineers in their GPU department.

Maybe because they were trying a totally new approach to GPU design, and its not somethign they've ever done before either.

Yeah, trying a new approach sure is something new for them - as opposed to implementing someone else "new approach" :p

Do you know what your talking about? Intel have spearheaded most CPU and MB design changes. While I wouldn't use an Intel Graphics chip for gaming, they're perfectly adequate for 2D and video watching.

AMD's problem is that they don't have a big enough R&D budget to compete with Intel. Purchasing ATI was a good move as it expanded their holdings into another area but along with the purchase came the required skills. Intel, to my knowledge have not ever purchased a graphics company and their graphic chips are their own design.

You have an opinion on AMD and Intel.. but that doesn't mean you have ANY idea what you're talking about when it comes to Larrabee.
