Intel Core i7 processor

Mmmm looks like Socket 775 has come to an end. The new socket is 1336-pin.

Awesome..... now at last I can run the prompt window in Windows without it lagging on me! :D

You are talking about the next generation Intel processor. Is the current Q9550 fast? The i7 will be faster in terms of multiples of the Q9550...

So I take it NOW is not a good time to buy a pc... Although, it's never really :D

I was thinking of buying a new pc with a E8400... Should I rather wait? Although for gaming purposes 4 cores, 8 threads... Pfft most games dont even use 2 cores yet?

Why can't companies stick with the same brand names? Why do they have to make it so confusing for consumers? What was wrong with Pentium 5? Windows 2008? Photoshop 12? This trend of coming up with a fancy new name for every new release is frustrating for newbies (and oldies alike). Nobody knows which version follows on from what anymore. "Core 2" and "dual core" were two of the stupidest names ever conceived! Which on is better? Which one has two cores? And why wasn't the one with four cores called Core 4? Damn irritating!

Agree 100%

Maybe they want to spice things up for us . . .

Quite simple.

"Core 2" refers to the Core microarchitecture. The fact that the processor is called "Core 2 Duo" or "Core 2 Quad" tells you that the processor is from the "Core" generation microarchitecture and has two or four cores on a single die. Previous microarchitecture was "Netburst", and new one is "Nehalem".

So "Core 4" would refer to something completely different (unless they called it "Core 2 4", which isn't too far off from what they chose).

This is what I hate.

I buy the best of the best and all that happens is that it tuns to "old" in 6 months :(

Intel's microarchitecture roadmap along with associated core codenames.

In typing this whole explanation, I'm more inclined to agree with you that naming the microarchitecture "Core" is stupid. Because it creates a bit of ambiguity when the word "core" is used, because people don't know if you're talking about the processor core or the Core microarchitecture. Imagine they came up with a new core codenamed "Microarchitecture" ! ! Then you'd get a "Core 2" microarchitecture processor with a "Microarchitecture" core :D

You call that "simple"???

confusing as hell.

and it does not explain "dual core"

Well with my standing quote at a store the E8400 came down by R300 yesterday. So it's not really expensive right now. Never is the best time to buy a pc... but the thing is, when the i7 comes out, it's gonna be so expensive at first it won't even be funny... so if you feel you can build a pc for a reasonable amount and you are happy that you won't have to upgrade within 2 years, go for it!?

Think of dual core as "Core 1 Duo"? It was the first generation of Intel processors with two processing cores.

thats why there is techies to translate for those who don't know
