Hi,

I've lately been having strange disconnects for like 5 minutes at a time maybe every hour or so. I'm unsure if the problem is related to my modem or is this maybe a new means of being "throttled" by telkom. I do download from the saix news server and average a total usage of about 50gb a month. I run a router with dd-wrt and and use the telkom supplied Mega105WR as the modem. Since the problem started to occur I switched over to the mega105wr in case it may be a problem with dd-wrt, however the problem still persists. Could someone perhaps guide me in some tests I may run in hopes to pinpoint the problem either to the hardware or the connection.

thx

I'm having the same problem.

Get Telkom and your ISP to test your line and check out the Attenuation. It should not be more than 55dB. There is a sticky at the top of this forum about that issue.

Log in to your router and look for Router Status or similar. It will tell you what it is recording as well.

The Attenuation readings in my case are:
Telkom say they get 38dB.
MWEB says 61dB
My Router says 60dB.
Guess who I believe?

Telkom say the problem could be the Pots filter, so I've unplugged the phone to see if that improves things.

Thx for the reply.

Modem status reports the "DS Line Attenuation" as 35 and "US Line Attenuation" as 21.
I'll phone telkom tomorrow, as I found out today they are currently only open within "office hours" which is strange because normally I would phone them at 1:00 am and had no problems.

The disconnects seem to happen when using the net quite intensely. I think i'm going to replace the modem just in case..anyone know where I could find cheap modem(ethernet) in Joburg without ordering online?

Thx for the help guys.

Hi, I've got the same problem, where it disconnects after a few minutes, then reconnects, etc, etc. I've tried 2 different routers, and both do it. I phoned Telkom just now, and they recreated the ports (whatever THAT does), but the issue is still there, maybe *slightly* longer between disconnect/reconnects. I wonder waht the issue is? I'm in the Bloubosrand (Northriding) area, where are you?

Davrin, I'm in the same area (Randpark Ridge), same connection, same ISP, same problem. Happened a couple of times yesterday as well.

Hmm.

Yeah, it's getting on my nerves. I logged a fault with Telkom, since the whole 'port recreation' thing didn't do jack. I guess it's dodgy internet until the technician decides to pitch up sometime this week.
I spoke to Mweb last night, and they say the fault isn't on their end.

Well, MWEB always says that. I've seen a couple of Telkom trucks around this week, so I don't know if they're up to something.

Very annoying indeed.
