Help: Frequent DSL Disconnects

Hi, need some help from the experts here.

Lightning took out my modem (Belkin Wireless N150) and PC on 12 December 2013.

I replaced the modem with a working modem that was stored away (2750u D-link) but that modem for some reason would not sync with the exchange. This is strange because the D-link was a working modem before and when telkom came out and plugged their modem in (netgear I think), their modem synced perfectly. I then got another modem (Billion W50) from my cupboard and that connected and synced immediately.

The problem….. I keep getting disconnected from the internet. The line shows that it has stayed connected all the time but i seem to lose connection. I think the line attenuation is too high but when I have asked Telkom Call Centre on 10210, they say that it is fine (below 50) at 31.5 (seems they using upstream LA).

I get confused with the upstream and downstream attenuation numbers but i am sure that my line attenuation is too high (59.5 below). It was previously (before 12 Dec) able to sync at just under 4mb (3846 KBps) with a line attenuation of 55.

What is the cause of my constant disconnects and low sync speed based on the following line stats?

Heyo,

I think the issue is that Attenuation :/ Your line seems to have degraded due to the lightning hit :(

Try contacting your Line's ISP and asking them to sync your line at 3Mbps and see if that makes a difference :)
 
Yup you are going to need to drop your line to 3mb.
If a line syncs anywhere between profiles especially with that attenuation its going to disconnect frequently.
Mine is exactly the same regardless of router so I have to run it at 3mb.

My account with Afrihost is a 2MB Business Uncapped. These are my stats after asking Telkom to move the line back down to 2MB. The attenuation has not budged from the 59.5.

It is quite frustrating that it was stable at 2MB before 12 December and now there are issues that Telkom quite frankly seems disinterested in resolving.

Your SNR has improved though. 6 is borderline working, so your previous SNR of 7 was expected to drop a lot.

With 9.5 though your line should be more or less ok.

Is it normal to fluctuate so much? Again, line went down and i restarted the modem.

You have any pots filters on your line?

The jack on the wall has two phone jacks. One cable is directly from there to the modem and the other has a pots filter leading to the telephone.

Unplug everything besides your router and check again.
 
That is the correct way of wiring it, if the POTS filter has only a phone port.

Telkom techie is here. He just called in reinforcements because he has no clue as to why the noise levels are so high. Its testing at the pole as 55 but on my modem its still on 60.

55db downstream line attenuation at the pole is already very high.

The Telkom techie should've also measured the line attenuation where your modem is, to ensure that it isn't just your modem that is reporting a 5dB higher line attenuation.

A different brand and model ADSL modem can make a massive difference in terms of stability - but you'll never be able to get a fast connection on an ADSL line that has such a high line attenuation. Telkom has to move you to a closer DSLAM to get the line attenuation down, unless it's currently that high due to corroded or poor connections somewhere.
