Internet Explorer 8 too late?

So no banking for anyone running Macs or Linux. Yup, that makes sense

No corporate Banking no. The normal Netbank site runs on multiple Browsers. This is for corporate clients who want an extra layer of security. The dongle can only be used on one computer and only by one person. Been that way for years. Are you surprised at this?

All I'm saying is, that there are some people out there who still program for IE only by default because it is still the dominant browser and there is a perceived sense of "corporate software" being more secure. It is not my choice, I would love to chuck IE completely. In fact 99% of them time that is all that I use IE for. I think the nedbank corporate site is the only link I have saved in that browser.

1. IE's current market share is around 70% (just below); Firefox is around 20%; Safari 8% (I think); Chrome and Opera around 1%.
2. Microsoft's market share hasn't been this low since IE4.
Microsoft's market share has been steadily declining since IE6.

For those that think this is unimportant, remember this: MS stopped development of web browsers after it had won the browser war. The only reason why IE7 was released was because of Firefox.

Likewise in the OS wars, Microsoft was going to discontinue XP, but was forced to extend its lifespan and drastically reduce its price due to Linux. It has been forced to priortise its performance of Windows 7 due to Linux.

The point being simply that Microsoft needs competition, otherwise it will stop innovating. I would also hazard a guess that if MS had 100% market share, all standards would be proprietary MS, and royalties would have to be paid.

The fact that Firefox is a better browser can be seen from its market share. In a very asymmetrical market (the bias being towards MS, and to a lesser degree Safari), it has attained 20% market share.

In the Acid3 rendering test, it (and all the other browsers) completely outperform IE. (IE8 scores 21; IE 7 around 13%; FF around 93%).

The question of IE8 being too late, is whether it is too late to stop IE's continual slide in market share.

The only time it will ever be late is when the ms operating systems market share falls.

Most users out there are "ID10T" users and all they look for on the desktop when they want to connect to the internet, is IE icon.

But I must admit, there is a trend starting to develop. It looks like MS IE is starting to copy more and more ideas from Firefox and not the other way around.

The Browser Wars?

I have never seen what any commercial entity has to gain from having the best browser on the planet other than for the end user's benefit?

What does MS make out of IE for instance? Is there a lot to gain from having the most used browser on the planet? Surely it is the web content that counts not necessarily the browser? By this I mean we (internet users) can see the same content of this or any other page using IE or FF.

There is obviously a lot to gain having the best browser?
Maybe someone could list the benefits.:)

Mozilla made millions ($ 70 million or something) from that little Google search box. Not bad...

Rebelling against the norm does not make those kids "tech savvy". I doubt any of them could give you a single valid reason why FF is better than IE. They just use FF because they want to be different and sound like they know something.

Have you tried using FF?

Have you ever heard of the Acid test?

Here is some nice stats on browser usage / month.

http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp

All this said and all there is still millions out there that don't even know anything else then IE, which comes standard with Windows.

Skewed stats. Its a website for people interested in alternative browsers. There are still millions out there that get swayed by misleading information.

I have FF, IE8, Opera and Chrome on my pc. So Yes I have tried FF. Unlike most Linux / FF fanbios I try all of the options and form my own conclusions rather than just saying "It's Micro$oft so it sux" or regurgetating the same drivel about FF being faster and more secure than IE.

Yes, and I didn't like it.

I am happy with IE8. It can do everything I want to with IE and never had the need to switch to FF again. FF looks good, but IE works for me.

In Microsoft's case, if they are the best they can shove their IDE and development tools (+back end servers + more schemes to make you buy separate services) down your throat and then try to make you believe how automated they made stuff. One of the advances of .NET and Java (well they both are byte code) is security (minus speed and heavier on resources). So when they find a security problem, they fix the framework. And in theory it should be seamless, but we all know by now, that Microsoft will then have an excuse to bump version and make some of your code incompatible. Just another scheme to make you keep on buying their crap, that you could have gotten for free somewhere else.

So despite the fact that IE8 scores dismally in the Acid3 rendering test, can block adverts and flash, and supports a whole host of other plug-ins, including weather and download accelerators, you still choose to use IE.

Fine, your choice.

Likewise, I have used Safari, Opera, IE and Firefox on my computer, and have rationally decided that FF works best for me. So have hundreds of others. To accuse anyone who disagrees with you of not being able to form their own onions is arrogant in the extreme. At any rate, the tone of your argument makes you far more despisable than any of the so-called "Linux/FF fanbois" that you criticise. There's a term for that too - it's called hypocrisy.

Also, you discount that fact that many people have chosen not to use MS on valid ethical grounds. There is a lot of evidence supporting the fact that MS engages in highly unethical market practices and marketing. While I'm not going to mention them here, if you're interested I suggest you do a bit of reading.

For all I know, you may be an astroturfer for Microsoft.

Yet when provided with valid reasons, you don't have an answer?

Out of every 100 pepole, how many are "tech savy"?
1?
1,5?

The timing of the IE8 release will have absolutely no impact whatsoever in the real world. The masses are not going to "run back" to IE - they never left it in the first place.

By the way, which browser do you think is the most popular in China? IE? Firefox?

It also depends on what your definition of 'tech savy' is. I'd say a good % of users use the default browser. Why should they switch unless mainstream media makes it out to be a big deal to switch. It's not like people who join the internet start searching for "safest web browser" and discover that IE is quite unsafe.

BTW BEST BROWSER EVER Netscape ver 1.xx :) Back in 1995!

Try reading that sentence again...Pretty sure you left something out.

How is it hypocritical for me to say that people constantly dismiss IE as insecure and slow without proof? I never said a bad word about FF or any other browser.

I just hate the fact that every post about IE is full of comments stating that IE sucks. The fact is that IE8 is still in beta which means it is not finished yet. Why would you be surprised that it has flaws?

I use browsers to enable me to get stuff done. I could care less if it was coded by Daffy Duck. I think that the vast majority of people fall into this category.

None of the browser are 100% secure. None of them are without bugs. The fact is that 99% of hackers (Ethical and unethical) focus their attention on breaking IE.
