Internet security breach at Vodacom

Turn on your PM and I will engage with you there. I don't think this is relevant to the topic under discussion.

Of course it concerns Vodacom's customers, it is not your concern (you are an MTN customer) stop monopolising the thread.

So you are not allowed to comment on a company's ( lack of ) service unless you are a current customer?

I think not.

Why weren't we told earlier? We get 'previews' of Vodacom campaigns before the Sunday of announcement and other inside information, yet we have to see it first in the newspaper??? Somebody on this forum must have known!

I'm pretty disappointed by this.

I had it happen to me once. I was using opera and I managed to be logged in as someone else. I reported it back then as a bug. That was over a year ago...

Interesting - Did you get a reference number?

I did, but i'm afraid i lost it. It was as though i was logged in as someone else. I only noticed when i went to send an sms and my quick contact list was different... I reported it and a day or so later they asked me to see if it was still a bug, I logged in fine as me so I thought nothing more of it. I'll see if i can find the reference number.

I vaguely remember that problem, something to do with a university proxy server caching session IDs, which Vodacom did fix shortly after yourself or another forumite reported it to v3g. This latest fixed vulnerability was a completely separate problem.

One of the things I was taught when studying Computer Science a long time ago, is that one cannot prove the absence of bugs in any system - there will always be bugs. IMO this is especially true when a system [over time] gets used for and changed to serve a different purpose than it was originally intended.

Any of any company's systems are likely to contain bugs, the main thing is that the bugs get fixed as quickly as possible and that temporary measures are put in place to reduce the risk of bugs being exploited, Vodacom did exactly that as reported in the article.

Yes, I remember that specific case, you could actually end up being logged in as someone else. As you say, that was fixed at the time and the current 'Report Tab' problem is something different.

Not sure when the new report system will come on-line, but I've seen quite a few architecture designs being analysed, so hopefully not too long.

You're spot on with your comments on the evolutionary model of systems. They tend to evolve into a bit of a mess over time. This applies to any system, not just software.

Every few years (or some relevant timeframe), it makes sense to completely redesign the system, but this is no mean task when you're working on (what I believe is) the most active website in South Africa.

Currently known as the Marketing Department:D

Vodacom is privileged to have one of the most strenuous 3rd-level testing programs known to mankind. This group will find any flaw, however small, and rip into the poor developers making them feel lower than snail-poo.

While 1st and 2nd line testing might allow flaws to slip through, this bunch is ruthless and nothing escapes their attention.

Not only will they expose any flaws, however minute, but they'll give strong feedback on how these problems can be overcome and how to never, ever make similar mistakes ever again, on the pain of death.

Developers quiver and break out in cold sweat when they hear their name.

This group is off course affectionately known as the "MyADSL Community" and Vodacom would not be where it is today without them!

Many many moons ago, when I logged into my account, I got to some random person's details and what not ... I think I actually raised a concern on this here forum about it

I remember, and I escalated it to be fixed at that point. This is a different situation, actually not as serious as the one you (and others at the time) found.

This appears to be a sarcastic, cynical and snide attack on another user. It does not become you, nor your employer. In fact it is plain tacky.

Not at all, I truly did forget we already published an apology by the time this thread started. (I should have remembered, as I said I wrote it).

But again, if one stuffs up (like we did), I've got no problem apologising for as long as it takes. The person above who was so 'disappointed' was also the one asking for an apology, so again, I'll apologise, even if he was not affected by the problem and thus never saw the apology.

At this time, I would also like to apologise to you for my post coming across as tacky. Sorry.

Can't please all of the people all of the time.... :D

In an industry where the product is purely software intellect, there will always be flaws. The quality of the development team is determined by how quickly and accurately the flaw is corrected.

No matter how thoroughly it is tested in QA, bugs do and always will creep in.... :p

hey if South Africans can't bitch about things what would we do?

Nicely put indeed. There is a lot of value to this forum, and its input.
As you mentioned - Vodacom have definitely benefited from having an active rep around here indeed. Dare I say, Customer Centric.
Next questions in the slipstream of above compliment.
When can we expect other constructive comments/suggestion etc from the forum to find its way to ground level??
(1) Data roll-over
(2) Better QOs (eg lower latency)
(3) Larger caps
:D

<IMO>
I hazard a guess that Vodacom's network QoS will improve drastically on 2008-05-01.

I suspect DBR will never happen - we are more likely to see uncapped data bundles - perhaps towards 2010 [i.e. after SEACOM is operational & if|when EASSy is completed], the same applies to larger caps.
</IMO>

What I really want to know, is when will Vodacom have [searchforum]realtime data usage monitoring for CDBs[/searchforum]?

I'm inclined to <sob, sob> agree. Just touched the first 3 that came to mind. Personally they could have scrapped the 3.6MB - and improved the overall existing, but then they would not be keeping up with the "wetter connectioon"..

I have actually had it with the metering - going over bundle - not receiving notification, and then not being allowed to absorb the out of bundle into the add-hoc bundle I add - even when they admitted to technical problems hijacking the sms. Why should I pay for their stuff-up!!
