Internet Solutions Uncapped ADSL under fire

Other ISP's smiling

Sure Mweb, Openweb and Axxess are smiling all the way. Why can these companies get shaping right, but a big company like IS can't...

Eish............. bloody agents..... gee... I wonder

and secondly, as long as chief mala***a (one of Sean Nourse's bosses) can coin his 250k salary for 6 months while under fire cause of the non-competitiveness... he's happy... His wife will still be driving the X1 she bought while he was calling shots... then off to the next company to r@pe in cost while screwing around the public

Where did you read 'in 2 days'? The article doesn't state over what period the gigs were used.

Internet Solutions (IS) recently launched their new uncapped ADSL services which are accompanied by a new Fair Use Policy (FUP).

Internet Solutions (IS) has recently informed its stakeholders that it is repackaging its Basic Uncapped and Express DSL services from the 1st of August 2010

Hey guys,
Quick question, what exactly would I offer up when I move over to Mweb uncapped 4mb ?
I use to worry about the shaping issue, but considering IS is doing it now, I really don't understand why I'm paying R1500 for a product that surely seems to be an exact copy, if not worse product, than say Mweb's offer?

Or am I missing something?

You know what, answer me this, if I use Mweb 4mb uncapped, will I be able to achieve 350-400 kbps (About the average I use to get from IS) when downloading via an international usenet server?

I think IS don't want uncapped users on their network. Time to move people...

Yes..as long as seacom is up ;)

There seams to be a Flaw in IS's thinking

I understand they are trying to apply a mathamatical formula to work out abuse but I don't think it can be that simple.
Say the top 50% of users are over 300 gigs so they will start getting throttled heavily when they reach 300 gigs then so they will be severly limited to what they can do so there usage drops sharply but over time this 300 gig threshold will be dropping that will include more users in that 50% of abusers which will drop the threshold even more so eventually you will not be able to use more than a few gigs of data before you get throttled

I am right in my thinking?

@TwinDucT

Put it this way, Mweb do shape/throttle even though they don't admit it. BUT... they only shape specific protocols. so they would shape only your usenet, not your normal browsing/youtube/email. Mind you the shaping of P2P like usenet and torrents is only during the day. 5-6 out of 7 nights a week it is opened up and you get full speed. I manage about 200+ gig a month and i don't really run downloads 24/7. I cannot speak for IS as i haven't used it, but Mweb been really good so far.

Two concurrent connections where the account speed is shared between the two connections (4Mbps = 2 x 2Mbps) is also allowed.
Now which ISPs offer this? I use afrihost 15 GB shared between home and business and this might be better. Also how would it be split if home is 386 and work 4096? Any ISPs know the answer?

FTP speed yesterday was absolutely pathetic. Max I could get was 800B/s

Switched over to Mweb uncapped... 30Kb/s instantly.

If the situation persists, then drastic measures will be taken.

I have noticed Zilch shaping on Mweb.. yes they have their issues with downtime... not really to blame on them as the RCA always lies with neotel/seascam (most of the time that is).
eventhough all the bad mouthing to mweb of slow speeds blah blah blah.. i still give them thumbs up on their service and ability to challenge south africa in price competitiveness...

mweb uncapped ftw
mweb downtime, not so much

IS has always been the underdog when it comes to new services. I remember their capped accounts being dog slow a few years back... and now the uncapped services... They seem to take a year or so to get it right.

Hopefully the new MD will bring some positive change in the years to come...

I understand what u r trying to say
but there is one issue: if they shape 50% of users on 4mbit.... u cant get more ppl in that 50%...
but what u meant i assume is that the amount taken to be in the top 50% will get lower and lower
but the same number of ppl, relatively will stay in the top 50%, it was just easier to get there

so say theres 300 users, half or 150 will be shaped
the cut off point might have been 300gb
now the number usage limit might drop to say 200gb the cut off point (as ppl try to avoid been shaped and so use less)
still only 150 ppl will be shaped... they just got shaped sooner and couldnt make it to 300gb ne more

however the cut off point isnt a fixed amount and will vary based on the total pool of usage
so as one person becomes shaped another may drop out of the category of been shaped cuz the overall average changed and they are now below it, whereas the other person got above it

Business users have different needs. Most of them will host their own email server(s) and so on.

What will happen should IS cause some of these clients to lose a contract due to poor email delivery?

Leave the throttling alone, ease up on it. Only when a client deviates from their normal traffic patterns to an "abusive" pattern, can throttling be applied, but NOT draconian throttling.

gonna do some statistical analysis on this topic now that im on leave in cpt for a week.

Gonna see how this compares and downsides of this announcement. will post something about this in a couple of days

try using torrents or downloading off newservers during the day or before 01h00 at night. you will definitely see shaping.

hotfile / rapidshare or any of those i got accounts with, are not shaped in my experience. I pull off @ 400 to 410.. not maximum, but good enough for me
