Hi Guys

I trust you are well.
I m looking to get the Internet Solutions 512 Satellite unlimited account.
Is this any good?
Do you know what download speeds i ll get.

Thanks

Depends on the thunderstorm, cloud cover and The black spots on the sun (all the reasons Internet Solution used to explain their slow internet speed).

I'm on one of those. I'm very happy with it. The only times it does not always run flat out are workdays and Sat morning. Flat out = approx 50kbytes/sec. Not-flat-out does depend a bit on time of month and the number of connections you have open ( ie: use a download manager with 8 sockets open min for the best ) and varies from 35kbytes to 50kbytes/sec. In spite of the claims in post #2 I have very little IS related downtime - some Telkom downtime for the usual reasons. If you can, ask for the Billion router not the Cisco - it is more tolerant of Telkom's shena****ns. I do 60-80 gig a month and no moans, though I have heard they keep an eye on the over-50 gig users. Great service.

+1 for IS fibre 512 uncapped/unshaped - I've had this for about a year now, and no downtime at all - very stable compared with the satellite - pulling about 5.3GB per day average, 159GB per month.

Also getting consistant downstream of 59KB/s and upstream of 31KB/s.

When I had my IS satellite uncapped/unshaped, I had really bad latency and the downtime was ridiculous - as mentioned above, the slightest storm and the connection was knackered until the clouds cleared... and you know how many storms there are in JHB during the summer... :D

How much does it cost per month, I'm interested as well...

Satellite version is R1539 pm, with a similar setup fee ( I can't remember exactly how much ). They supply the router - it is closed to you.

Edit: PS - I really don't know why others have had so much downtime because of "clouds" or whatever - I do not experience this.

My current ISP monthly charge is R2165... incl VAT (R1899+) -business package :)

You can pick it up for R1,710.00 setup fee and R1,938.00 monthly charge (Incl. VAT)
The 1024 fibre is R1,710.00 setup fee and R3,648.00 monthly charge (Incl. VAT)

Their satellite charge is R1,425.00 monthly (incl. VAT) with the same setup fee of R1710.00

Howdie!

Also on the IS static IP satellite package -I am very happy with it!

Used to be on the 384 Express account, but changed when the rolling window was started.

Can confirm approx. 50k/s down. Had virtually no downtime since I started. Doing about 3,5 - 4,0GB per day down. As stated, latency may be an issue for gaming, but no problem for downloading or Skype. (most of my traffic is http international - can not vouch for torrents but should not be a problem as unshaped).

Only caviat is that most ISP's reselling these require 12 month contract. Oh, the other thing is that no pop3 / smtp service - this will be extra.

About cost: Most 512 satellite = R1700 setup with +-R1539 per month; Fiber 512 = R1700 setup with +- R2500 per month;

Not sure the extra cost for fibre is worth it if just for downloading. If low latency is needed for international gaming, then different story. (Local latency same as standard ADSL line).
