I've just bought modern Warfare 2 like 4 hours ago from Marko and upon installing I get this message from a NEW GAME. Should I return it considering the fact that it's now worthless to me, or should I try get steam to move the title to my name?

well the longer you sit on it the longer it will get to be replaced.;)

Im pretty sure they wont take it back

but it should be easy enough to get another CD-key, reassign it or whatever

This has never happened to me but I read about it somewhere... cant remember where

If you can confirm that you've been using the correct code (not 0 -> O, or 0's are 8's, I/L/1, etc.), then take it back.

no 0/O 1/L/I or anything ambiguous in the cd key. I can ask them to exchange the game. but i've contacted Steam :)

I also have proof of purchase, and the cd key, sent scans of both... so it's obvious I bought the game today and logged the compliant today :)

i bought a four pack game from the fleamarket many years ago and when i got home and installed the games one of them needed a key so luckily we knew the seller so phoned her but she did not have the bool with the key code in it. eventually i searched the internet and actually came across the key code and the game worked.

is it legal or illegal to post key codes on the internet?

do you mean games where you compete with other people on the web, the one i bought is like a sim game that you play on one pc not against other people.

Yes.
If you remain offline all is OK.
If you buy the original, then never ever post your key anywhere or even give it to your buddies!!!

/even the Sims! You can register online and receive updates, patches, etc.

thanks moggie i just wondered cause i did not expect to find the codes online and it would have been a waste of money having the game and not being able to use it. when i say sims game it is so old it was proberly made before the internet existed.

sorry man maybe i was misunderstood. i bought the game years ago and it had no key code but after searching the internet i found it and it worked, so it's all sorted.

Most stores don't exchange games. They reckon people just take the games for the cd-keys and to copy the game and then they return it or exchange it for a new one with new cd-key

So it would be very difficult to exchange games.

And some conniving shop employees pinch the keys because they have a policy of taking the disks out of the boxes. I would take it back pronto. You can get Steam to issue a new one, but it involves photos of the cover and serial and a copy of the receipt. Given that it's holiday time, that could take a week or more.

Happened to me. Only once. Took it back and almost bliksemmed the youngster behind the counter. Now I insist on sealed package. Not my problem if they need to place anti-theft devices in each case!
