Inverter and batteries

The closer you can get to each battery string having exactly the same cable lengths each side the better.
 
After lots of thinking, weighing my options vs costs and although I really wanted a pure sine like @Dairyfarmer has, I ordered the Mecer 2400VA Inverter and 2 deep cycle batteries. I still need to get another notebook which has been on hold for months now.

Modified sine wave is not always "enjoyed" by some devices.

Fluorescent tubes and AC motors are a good example. Unless you enjoy disco style lighting.

If you want a solar and battery backup system as an alternative solution, pure sine wave definitely. However I am just worried about my office and running my PC's at the moment to get me through load sheds and the endless power outs.

I am also exploring the same solution, however, I am contemplating possibly using my UPS so that it is "clean" power. I have a 3kva UPS (pure sine wave) - Would it be "ok" to add additional batteries to extend the up-time?
It will only be used for lights and electronics - at most 1500w to be powered.

@*Zealot* Depends on the inverter. The charging speed is important. But that is basically what computer UPS's do. They hold a small storage capacity to allow time for shut down and compensate during short blackouts and the inevitable Eskom brownouts. But they genery have 1000VAC/600W inverters and 2 to 4 9ah batteries. They unfortunately don't like long term power outages.

Will you be using this between the "critical load" and inverter? Would the inverter then charge the UPS too?
 
Adding batteries within the design capacity is NOT an issue. Exceeding the design capacity is. The more batteries /battery strings you add, the longer it is going to take for the batteries to be charged. The charging rate of the inverter/charger is fixed and if too low for the total batteries added, you will need more time between power breaks for the batteries to be fully charged.

So if I had to build a battery bank on the side, charge it separately (standalone charger) and "flip a switch" to connect the bank to the UPS once UPS is running with the load, it should be ok? Once Eskom is back on, I disconnect the bank and charge again?
