Investing strategy.

I believe the benefit is that you pay 12% CGT vs 18% and other taxes are managed in the fund. It benefits individuals who pay more than 30% tax ( please correct me if I am wrong on this). It's also easier sending your money to Allan Gray compare to IB.

I'm hearing alot about these endowment/ sinking funds as of recent. Wonder what else is shared during these wealth management meetings...
I see. I’ve been outta SA for a while, so not clued up on the latest tax rules there.

Yes, of course, but it doesn't mean you should buy now. People were greedy for more than a decade and fearful for a week. It is important to look at the full cycle.
So you still happy you sold?

Hmmm, I think you are on to something here.

Are we expecting any global oil shenanigans thanks to Trump? Would it impact Sasol?

The last time Sasol tanked was when the oil price went negative in April 2020, right? Or am I conflating issues?

WTI just fell off a cliff:

Well, I mean, I bought in at around R57.73... Sasols been going sideways, but I'm still up 87% as of today.

I think I ****ed the bus a little... US Situs Tax
I was under the impression that would apply to owning direct US company shares - not ETFs - I was wrong.

Its basically everything that is on US exchanges. Not only the Capital gains, but also the principle. So if you die your total assets are taxed at up to 40%.

What is Situs Tax: If you die, all your assets belong to US.

Tax Rates and Exemption
  • Exemption Threshold: For non-resident aliens, the US estate tax exemption is limited to only $60,000 of US-situs assets.
  • Tax Rate: If the value of US assets exceeds $60,000, the estate tax is levied at graduated rates ranging from 26% to 40%.
  • Impact: This can result in a 40% tax liability on the value of assets over $60,000, which is often considered "double taxation" for investors from countries like South Africa.
--==============================================--

So in summary - I now have to take a capital gains hit and move the cash to Ireland and buy into the equivalent ETF tracking the same thing.
