I’m going to guess you just had unfortunate timing and the battery is in fact kaput.
Won’t windows still recognize the device though?

@OP have you reset the device or reinstalled t after the update?
I don't want to do any reset yet after I've had a chance to do a backup.

Doubt it. I see many similar issues on the web which was solved by changing windows settings. I just checked and it is charging very slowly on the pc even though it says it is not detected.
I just did thisYou could backup to iCloud?
Doesn't work with plug but charging very slowly on the pc. All good. It's up to 76% now.Well then charge it overnight on a wall socket before attempting to plug it into windows.
I just did thisThank goodness for iCloud. It'll take a while but I don't care. As long as the data is saved. Thanks! Doesn't work with plug but charging very slowly on the pc. All good. It's up to 76% now.
Well, this is weird. There was nothing wrong with the cable, as I used it to charge another iPhone. She then found her other cable, used that and suddenly the phone charges only on that cable :wtf:
Anyway, all good for now.
Is it a 3rd party cable? I’ve noticed that some 3rd party cables don’t play nice with my 7 plus but work fine on my wife’s 6s.
Glad it’s sorted though
