iOS 17 Features and rumours

Okay, found the answer. When you have the feature enabled for "Face ID with a mask" then for some reason you cannot unlock your iPhone in landscape orientation. I still had it on.

Are you now able to unlock your 12 Pro in landscape orientation? Lots of sources claiming it is only 13 and up…definitely not working on my 12 Pro

Were any of those sources Apple?

On iPad or iPhone 12 or later, you can hold your device in either portrait or landscape orientation. If it's in landscape orientation, make sure that your finger isn't covering the TrueDepth camera. Then glance at the screen.

If you're wearing a face mask that covers your mouth and nose, you'll be asked to enter your passcode after swiping up.

Actually, no, it still doesn't work in landscape. Troubleshooting steps say to reset Face ID and then scan your face again but I don't find it important enough to do it anytime soon.
